Here is that basic principal of accounting put into simple terms:

Lets say you have a factory that produces belts and shoes

Lets say the overhead of your factory is 100k. Overhead equates to costs that can't be directly attributed to a specific department or production. An arena lease would be overhead.

Lets say the costs that are directly attributable to producing shoes is 110k. The revenue you make on for selling shoes is 100k.

At the same time the costs that are directly attributable to producing belts are 20k. You make 40k.

In this scenario you have a profitable business, however you lose money on producing shoes. If you were to eliminate your shoe production you would be far worse off and be flirting with bankruptcy.
So with that logic, the players should count in their endorsement money when calculating their income.

You think they don't?

NHL apparently sent memo to off-ice officials, for the first time during lockout, to be ready at a moment's notice. Very similar to the memo issued towards the tail end of the 94-95 lockout.

I don't get the point of you post or what it has to do with cost accounting. I'll put it to you this way: The guy that does their taxes uses any endorsement money while calculating their income.

Should owners have to include non hockey income in contract negotiation talks?

I haven't been following this lockout very closely - mainly disinterest - so apologies if it's been discussed.

If the 2013-14 cap gets rolled back to $60m (and some change), will the Sharks be in a world of hurt? With the latest NHL proposal, I haven't seen any mention about cap hits being rolled back starting 2013-14.

I think Sharks would be fine. They are at $65M right now with one spot open. Next year they have Handzus ($2.5M), Clowe ($3.6M), and Murray ($2.5M) coming off the books. Only Demers will be due a raise for the RFAs.

My guess is that the NHLPA will push back on the $60M and the 13-14 cap will end up something higher .

Is it possible to lower the salary cap without reducing cap-hits? If it is, I don't think the NHLPA would accept it regardless. 16/30 teams have a cap payroll of over 60 million, so lowering the salary cap without lowering cap-hits would lead to a ton of unemployment, wouldn't it? Unless you make the cap floor significantly higher, which I don't think some of the owners would like.

Either way, the Sharks aren't in too much trouble. There are teams that are in worse situations.

With all the hate thrown at Fehr I think this point needs to be made: After Fehr finished with his negotiations the MLB hasn't had a labor dispute in over twenty years. He negotiated for sustainability. The NHL could get there, but not if Bettman gets his way.

Lol let the denial begin

So, if the season starts 1/19, the first home game (from the original schedule) would be 1/31 (against Boston -- but we know that won't be). There's a big break of days originally slated for ASG that now need to be filled with games.

Now, the Sharks could start on the road (1/19 Dallas, 1/22 St Louis). The HP Pavilion has nothing on the schedule until 1/31.

So, I'd guess the Sharks might have their home opener circa 1/24.

I sounds like there will be a *new* schedule which will focus on inter conference/divisional play with the shorter season. I expect that several/most of the current schedule home dates will be the same, with new opposition. Other home games, TBS, based on the Tanks open dates.

"no major deal breakers", can't help but feel optimistic.

I'm assuming if we do have a season there is still a huge gap of road games in February due to the SAP Open, correct. So it will still feel like the Sharks have more road games than home games anyway. This ought to be fun.

KK summary of tonight's negotiations. NHL said yes to some NHLPA items, moved closer to NHLPA items, and no to some.

So, I wonder if future city-sponsored arena deals will have clawback clauses if games are missed due to lockout or strike?

Isn't the whole reason a city subsidizes an arena/team so that local businesses can prosper? If I was a city that just subsidized an arena to keep an NHL team, I'd be pretty pissed if then that NHL team locked out its players and didn't play.

the fact city subsidized arena's are so rare now adays, it won't really matter.

i can't even think of what arena was last built with the city paying the most money into it.

Thousands of tweets later after four hours+ of evening meeting....

cotsonika 10:07pm via Web So again, in sum, no disclaimer, still talking, still a lot to talk about, still time to keep inching toward deal and salvage season.

Pierre LeBrun ‏@Real_ESPNLeBrun Another detail emerging: NHL has upped its compliance buyout offer to 2 per team, up from 1 prior to 2013-14 season.

usa handily beats canada in world juniors. if the lockout ends today, this might be the best hockey day in a long, long time.
