HFBoard's Top 20 All-Time Devils Players (#4)

1. Martin Brodeur (85.71% of the votes).
2. Scott Stevens (98.08% of the votes)
3. Patrik Elias (69.70% of the votes)

Muller had the most votes. Lemieux narrowly beat Rafalski with six votes to Rafalski's five.

Please read judging criteria

1. We are judging only on what the player did while playing for the organization (i.e. Bill Guerin might've been great elsewhere, but he only had a brief time on the Devils).
2. We are judging for what they did while with the Devils, as in keep hatred of Niedermayer, Gomez, and Parise leaving aside.
3. It's not going to be about who your favorite player is, it's about who contributed the most to the organization in a player role.
4. Lastly, try to think of the players for their overall impact, and not in the diminished roles they were used later in their careers (White, Pandolfo).

Tough call between Dano and Nieds for me.

Daneyko wasn't a better player, but since we're talking about overall impact not just how good a player was, Daneyko is my pick.

Conflicting messages here - are we going with just on the ice or overall (player, coach, broadcaster, etc) impact?

As a huge Elias fan and a avid supporter of 27 not being in the rafters how did Elias beat Neids? That being said i pick Niedermayer.

Tough between Dano and Nieds but I can't not pick Scotty. He was my favorite player ever when I was a kid. My tastes have changed since then, but Niedermayer is probably the most talented Devil to ever put on the sweater (besides Marty and maybe now Kovy), and was absolutely top of his game when he was here. I don't think a player who can be considered one of the best offensive defensemen of the last few decades can be denied because of Daneyko's intangibles.

I still think the Devil fans who don't appreciate what Niedermayer did for this team need to have their heads checked.

Kind of funny, most of the anti-Niedermayer people are huge supporters of Elias. Not sure how that came to be, but they seem to forget how close Elias came to signing with THE RANGERS.

I don't think choosing him as #4 instead of #3 is not appreciating him.

It's just appreciating what Elias has done more

It's no slight at Niedermayer at all. I don't even think I even know anyone who is still the least bit bitter about him leaving.
On the other hand, I don't understand the backlash at having Elias come in at 3rd.

He's always been one of the best leaders and players on this team.

And he still is. At age 36.

This thread isn't what I was referring too. I disagree with Elias 3 Nieds 4, but I understand why people see it like that. It's the dislike for Niedermayer in general.

I've honestly never met anyone with a grudge against the guy.

I didn't even know that many people who were too upset immediately afterwards.
Maybe a little bitter, but quickly rescinded.

These people exist?

There have been several threads on this board locked over the debate on whether his number should be in the rafters or not.

Just purists over numbers being retired or out of disdain?

Oh well, it wasn't too long ago that I learned that there's a vocal portion of this fanbase that hates Fayne, so I guess nothing should surprise me.

I do know a lot of people who still despise Mama Nieds, though.
But most of that began with the scowl she had on her face while the Devils were shutting the Ducks out Game 7.

There's a few from each side. Some people think 3 numbers + Brodeur and Elias is too many numbers for a 30 year old franchise. I don't see why have 4 elite players + Daneyko is that big of a deal. I think it's a good thing.

The ones doing it out of disdain are worse. Apparently he betrayed us. Three Cups apparently weren't enough.

The guy wanted to hand the Cup to his brother, something all hockey brothers dream of doing one day. And he did this AFTER 12 elite seasons with NJ. The man accomplished everything a hockey player wants to with the Devils. He wanted to do one more personal thing.

I meant overall impact as in he contributed in a variety of ways other than Niedermayer. Like Daneyko was here from the start, it's solely about their time in a Devils uniform, but when talking about greatest Devils, I think Daneyko should be over Niedermayer. When talking about better players, obviously Niedermayer was better.

But who comes after Elias?
Larsson? henrique? Merril?

Well have 5 in 5 years, but we'll also have 5 for another 10
