Good call. I feel the same way entirely.

It depends, really. I think once a deal is reached, it will be a 50-50 split. That being said, the road to getting there is interesting. NHLPA might say, "we want 55% if you're going to limit us to 5 year contracts." Then the NHL compromises and says "fine, 50% and no limit."

It's haggling. It's just frustrating that they waited until AFTER the CBA expired to start negotiating. Really whoever picked 9/15 as the end date for last CBA is a moron. Should have ended mid-July to allow teams to sign FA's and then begin negotiating.

The 5 year contract limit seems to be part of a package aimed at ending back-diving contracts. If the other components of the package are kept (no more than $500,000 swing from one year to the next and cap hit remaining if player retires), I don't think a length limit is necessary at all. I agree with ending back-diving contracts, however, career contracts with a steady cap hit are fine by me.

Why not just make the cap hit equivalent to the highest one year salary paid during the duration of the contract?

RT @JoshRimerHockey: Have been told that the NHLPA's counter offer for the most part will be off the NHL's latest offer.

Also the big 4 are going to meet privately before the big meeting at 2:30

The NHL mentioned in their release of the proposal on the website that the league and teams feel there needs to be more player movement in trades.

The shorter contracts and the ability to trade a little bit of cap space allow for more deals.

Maybe it's just BS they are spewing to the fans but I do think it would cause more trades.

Can you imagine carrying an $11.8 cap hit for Kovy over the duration of 15 years?

Yes, at least they're speaking the same language now instead just of hurling rhetoric.

Now its rhetoric + negotiating.

Haha, absolutely not. But it would certainly prevent teams from offering front loaded contracts. Brad Richards would have a 12 mil cap hit.

NHLPA will be pressing a progressive approach towards getting to a 50/50 split, but will battle to have it there right off the bat.

That means they are just going to take the pieces in the NHL's proposal and twist them more toward their favor.

If they are still intent on being hard-headed, the proposal is very favorable to their side, if they want to get a deal done, they find a pretty fair deal, maybe leaning a bit more to their side.

The NHLPA might be able to get away with a 57-55-53-51 deal, and then set flat on 51 after that. Maybe even just make those even numbers, 56-54-52-50. I just hope, as a hockey fan, that the NHLPA is willing to cave in just as much as the NHL did. They will probably still propose things that favor their side, the same way the NHL did, but hopefully they aren't favoring their side so much as to be insulting to the NHL. The NHL did a good job of making their proposal pretty fair, even though they technically "won" that proposal, had it gone through.

It will probably be too complicated, but if the salary had to be a certain percentage off the cap hit, then it might work. It's really complicated and it's actually kind of hard to calculate, but it'll work, especially once GMs and agents learn how much each cap hit fluctuates.

What I would say is that a players salary has to be within 125% and 75% of their cap hit. For example, if a team wants to sign a player to a deal with a 6 million dollar cap hit, they can pay the player no more than 7.5 million in any given year and no less than 4.5 million in any given year. Sure, there may be deals that are backloaded, but it prevents it from bringing the cap hit down significantly.

That's just an idea, and they can come up with percentages for each salary range, or make that a mandate on long-term contracts. They could define long-term contracts as 5+ years.

For example, Kovalchuks deal with a cap hit of 6.66 million, in that scenario, he can't get paid any more than 8.325 million in any given year and no less than 4.995 million. This would allow the teams to fluctuate the dollars, but not to an excessive point.

If Eklund reported that, my hope for a season would have dropped to zero.

According to my colleague Mathieu Dandenault, the NHLPA will submit 4 different offers to the #NHL. All include 50-50 clauses on rev sharing

Katie Strang ‏@KatieStrangESPN
#CBA Of the multiple (4) proposals discussed on PA"s conference call, all include gradual step-downs to 50-50.

Katie Strang ‏@KatieStrangESPN
#CBA Told that players discussed merits of these proposals and which, if not all, should be presented to NHL this afternoon

I'm envisioning 4 proposals being presented like Let's make a Deal. "Mr. Jacobs, you can take this proposal or the 1 behind Door No. 2."
