Meetings over, NHL to speak soon.

I expect them to say they have to take a few days to review all 4 offers.

Edit 3 offers I guess

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie
I am hearing NHLPA presented three offers to NHL.

Bettman confirms NHLPA made three counter proposals. Says none of them "even began to approach 50-50." Not encouraged

Tom Gulitti ‏@TGfireandice
RT @mirtle: Bettman concerned things are not progressing. Believes proposal today was step backwards. (All bad news folks.)

Tom Gulitti ‏@TGfireandice
RT @SunGarrioch: "We're not speaking the same language," says Bettman. #nhl

@drosennhl: Bettman again stresses the proposals made today by the PA were a variant of the one made in the summer.

Renaud P Lavoie ‏@RenLavoieRDS
Gary Bettman:"I don't know what's the next step. I'm really discouraged"

Bruce Garrioch ‏@SunGarrioch
"We were done in an hour because there is really nothing there." - said Bettman

James Mirtle ‏@mirtle
Bettman says at some point in near future they'll have to start committing money to Winter Classic and a decision will have to be made.

Bettman says PA's proposal has them spending more potentially on salaries in Year 1.

The players do need some incentive to bite on the 50/50 hook, though.

You can't realistically say:
1. take less money
2. take more salary constraints and
3. tighten up the competition for jobs due to lower cap/aforementioned salary constraints

Without having a little bit of give so the players don't feel like they're getting bent over again. I go back and forth between who are the bigger jackbags in all this mess, but I do think the owners need to try and find that carrot to dangle before this moves forward.

That is kind of odd. I could understand putting up a picture of him as a professional, but it's a little weird to see one of him as a kid.

The players could of negotiated the contract terms and salary fluxuations.

But coming off the 50-50 split is just pure ignorance or arrogance...i'm not sure yet.

For a deal to be reached, both sides need to give a little ground. It seems like the NHL made a good faith attempt to give a little, and the PA wasn't interested in reciprocating, so we go right back to a stalemate.

until the pa realizes that their proposals of 54% going down to eventual the 50/50 split will get them nowhere, the lockout will continue

i am sure the nhl would be willing to bend on contract terms, etc, if the pa agrees to the immediate 50/50 split.

50/50 should be the end goal, but crashing from 57-50 on top of everything else probably isn't sitting well with the players.

Year 1 should be closer to 53 or 54% - you'll get less of a push back from the players I think.
Regardless of who deserves what... the immediate drop to 50 (if I read all the numbers from the NHL proposal properly) is probably what's causing the dissent.

I think the NHL's friendly 50/50 split has mislead us all a bit.
They didn't give anything, really. There's no incentive whatsoever for these players.

I'm of the side that both sides are morons of the highest degree, but the NHL said "ok, we're still restricting nearly every single one of your negotiating rights when it comes to drawing up contracts but we'll take just a little bit less of what we intended to take from you in terms of HRR."

And I'm not condoning the attitude, but 04-05 left a BITTER taste in the NHLPA's mouth... they need to feel like they get something out of this.
Something that can make them say "at least we got this despite losing everything else"

And that's what they're not getting. There is not the figurative carrot to be dangled in front of them to follow the owners down the path to 50/50.

If you're surprised at the events of today, you weren't a baseball fan when this ******* ****ed the sport every which way to tomorrow to get a few extra bucks for the players. And it worked financially until the FANS finally pushed back after the '94 cancellation and decided they had enough. No coincidence that there hasn't been any labor issues in baseball since.
