HFBoard's Top 20 All-Time Devils Players (#6)

1. Martin Brodeur (85.71% of the votes).
2. Scott Stevens (98.08% of the votes)
3. Patrik Elias (69.70% of the votes)
4. Scott Niedermayer (79.69% of the votes)
5. Ken Daneyko (76.00% of the votes)

Gionta, Richer, Langenbrunner, and Driver were tied with three, so I'm just going to add them all for the hell of it. Everyone in table except MacLean

Please read judging criteria

1. We are judging only on what the player did while playing for the organization (i.e. Bill Guerin might've been great elsewhere, but he only had a brief time on the Devils).
2. We are judging for what they did while with the Devils, as in keep hatred of Niedermayer, Gomez, and Parise leaving aside.
3. It's not going to be about who your favorite player is, it's about who contributed the most to the Devils in a player role.
4. Lastly, try to think of the players for their overall impact, and not in the diminished roles they were used later in their careers (White, Pandolfo).

***Remember to write your recommendations when you vote***

Note: I am compiling stats and accomplishments for each player, for the next poll.

Here's where it starts getting tough. Personally, I know of MacLean's accomplishments, but only caught the last 1.5 years of his Devils career. Despite knowing more recent players better, I've got to go with Johnny Mac.

Also, I hate to be the one to go there, but if we're nominating players like Langenbrunner... we've got to nominate Parise. Sour grapes aside, objectively he was a very good Devil.

I nominate Parise.

I vote Dano, but I really can't vote him cause he's not an option since he won number 5. If we're gonna nominate guys like Parise, and Langs, then we gotta put in Maclean too despite his joke of a coaching career.

I'll vote Maclean again.

I'd definitely put Langenbrunner over Parise. Parise was the better player by far for most of the time they were here together, and Parise will certainly go down as a better player than Langenbrunner as well as a better captain for this team. I'd put Langenbrunner over Parise mostly for the 03 playoffs. Definitely was a Conn Smythe candidate that year.

Parise deserves a significant spot though for being the second captain to take this team to the SCF. I'd put Parise over Gomez all day long.

This was a hard one for me.

It was between Kirk Muller and MacLean. Muller has the highest PPG for any Devils player that has played over 300 games, a .93. Only Devils player that comes close to him is Kovalchuk who has 170 points in 185 games. Muller also played over 550 games too.

I'm just still weighing the length of MacLean's career versus Muller's shorter career with better numbers. Plus the fact that Muller was captain from 87-91.

Still mulling though.

LOL at ya know.

I'm gonna go old school, and add Pat Verbeek. His 46 goal season stood for like 15,16 years before Gio passed him.

Solely about player contributions.

Off-ice stuff and what happened when they left or after their careers isn't involved in this poll.

Muller is going to get snubbed when he's arguably more deserving than MacLean....

They're in the same tier.

For me, the next three are MacLean, Holik, Muller in that order.

Add (sigh) Zach Parise.

Always loved Maclean more than Muller. Some have different preferences than me, but as a fan during the time period Muller was playing for us I always was a Maclean guy. I did like Muller, and might even have an old jersey laying around. The only thing that taints Maclean was his coaching time, but I'm not even including that.

As far as I'm concerned that bald headed coach we had was just some nobody by the same name of a legendary player for us. It's like Jay Leach the coach, and Jay Leach the player.

In the process of making a table so we don't have this happening any more.

I have your standard Name, POS, Devils Career, GP, P, G, A, Stanley Cup Rings with NJ, Other. I was contemplating adding playoff points, thoughts? Other is pretty much what awards and honors they won with NJ.

I'd definitely put Holik next too. He's gotta be in a top 10. I'd put him over Gomez too. Guy was a great two way center for us for like 10 years. Not to mention we got him(and the draft pick that become Jay Pandolfo) for that piece of cheese Sean Burke(Please don't put him in the top 10)

I always consider things like deep playoff runs (at least the ECFs) and production in those runs. So I weight 1988, 1994, 1995, 2000, 2001, 2003, and 2012 quite heavily when thinking about all-time Devils greats.

Didn't someone compare John Maclean's injury in 91 to Parise's not long ago?

Maclean was having 40+ goal seasons before that like Parise was. He hurt his knee in preseason in 91, and had to sit out the whole season. He was still good like Parise was when he came back, but I think he only eclipsed the 30+ goal mark one more time in his career after that.

I distinctly remember him losing a lot of speed because of that knee injury.

Why weigh deep runs more than shorter runs? That makes for uneven comparison because with the deeper runs guys obviously had more games to produce and come up with big games and heroics compared to shorter runs - when we didn't even make it to the ECF but had guys like Langenbrunner, Elias, Gomez, Lemieux putting up a PPG pace in the first round or two for multiple playoff series that didn't make it to the ECF

Sure it may not be as special when those guys were producing at great rates because those teams didn't go as far as others, but those performances should be noted along with those that are notable from deeper runs
