20 Years Ago - First and Only Woman to play an NHL Game (TSN Feature)

Just wanted to share this wonderful little segment that HockeyWebCaster uploaded earlier today (which aired on TSN last night i believe)

Didn't know the story behind it before, and I think many of you haven't even heard about it.
It gets crazier the more you think of it, what if this would've happen today?

I remember all the hubbub surrounding that, then there was pretty much nothing about it for a long time.

Still very cool, though it would have been nice if she got to play the full game.

Wow has it really been twenty years? This is a cool video. I loved those 90s TBL jerseys.

No, only preseason.

Nice marketing move by Esposito, nothing more, nothing less.

"Him [Terry] and my brother [assistant GM Tony Esposito] … they weren't so happy. They said, 'What are you, crazy?' I said, 'Guys, we're an expansion team. We're not going to win [anything] anyways. We need the publicity.' Why do you think I drafted Brent Gretzky in the third round [of the 1992 NHL Draft]? We had to get people in the building. My whole strategy was once we get them in the building to see the game, we've got them. I did what I had to do. No matter what it took, we were going to get it done."

David Littman, producer of EA Sports' NHL series, was ousted from his net in order to make room for Manon Rheaume.

That's the most memorable thing about his career.

She's aged very well. While her stats throughout her career are not impressive at all (least at the minor league level), http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/p...y.php?pid=4537, I would think that she wouldn't have made it even as a male goalie simply due to her small stature. She looked so tiny out there against men.

The way Phil Esposito ran the Lightning reminds me of the stunts you'd see from a lower level minor league hockey club, like the Bakersfield Condors extending an offer to Justin Bieber. But hey, to his credit, he wanted attention brought to his team and he got it.

Manon Rheaume also appeared on the David Letterman show:

And here's her IHL debut:

That seems like a realistic timeline for the NHL to ban hitting, fighting, physical contact, trash talk, etc..

This happened when I was a kid but unlike tonnes of hockey memories in the 90s, I can proudly say that I remember when it happened (I think CBC showed the game or they showed the highlights from the same day at least).

Didn't Wickenheiser play against men in Switzerland or somewhere?

Reffing youth hockey (where female players are fairly common) I get lots of complaints of "inappropriate" sexual comments directed at female players, and usually the person making the complaint is a female team manager. I really want to just say one day "what do you expect? she's playing against adolescent 16 year old boys, if she doesn't like it, don't play the game" but I'd probably get in trouble

You're correct because according to HF logic goalies don't move anymore because of their massive equipment. All they'd need to do is find a woman who is near to 6 feet tall

Far from the exact same thing, but Yutaka Fukufuji was clearly just a PR gimmick by the Kings a few years ago...probably the worst goalie I've ever seen play an NHL game or thereabouts...

Um, he was a legitimate (albeit depth) prospect AND the Kings 5th string goalie that year, they were ravaged by injuries at that time.

Mathieu Garon, Dan Cloutier were injured long term. Kings had no desire to risk G Jason Labarbera (in the midst of an AHL Goalie of the Year season) to re-entry waivers in an already lost season. So 4th String G Barry Brust and 5th String Yukata Fukufuji was the tandem. When Brust went down day to day and so Yukata Fukufuji had to come in. Between Brust and Fukufuji the Kings got so desperate they went and got 40 year old Sean Burke and his .856svp with Springfield to just get something in net.

But, Fukufuji also had a 0.92gaa and .965svp in the AHL that year (in just 5 games but still) and a .905svp, 2.96gaa in ECHL. The two years before in ECHL he had .917svp, 2.91gaa in 29gp and .919svp, 2.48gaa in 44gp. Hardly horrendous numbers. He was a decent enough depth prospect.

Fukufuji also had some support on the Kings' scouting staff as one of the team scouts (Glenn Williamson) had coached Fukufuji. You can read more about it here, http://www.royalshockey.com/news/news.asp?story_id=68

He was just a longshot pick. Manon Rheaume was nothing more than a publicity stunt that Esposito has openly admitted to. It didn't hurt either side as she only got to play some minutes in a meaningless pre-season game and it brought attention to the expansion franchise. I'm sure it also helped Manon as I seem to recall her having some endorsement deals.

There was another charity hockey game involving the Kings and Ducks that Manon Rheaume participated in, appearing in net. I recall Kelly Hrudey also skating out as a forward. The game was to help support firefighters.

Goal is more likely than not the position where a woman is most likely to succeed in the NHL. I wouldn't be surprised to see others.

There was a quote from a member of the Kings staff that basically stated he was a PR pick...I'll try to dig it up. I remember arguing with people at the time that he was not a legitimate prospect (after seeing him play in net, that is) and came across a quote that said as much. I'm off to the waybackmachine...

EDIT: Bleh, can't easily find it, so I'll just concede the point. But, I know something to that effect was said because it was the death knell of a debate that I was a part of on a different board. I see there was a little cautious optimism about him too...so maybe it started as a PR pick and then they thought he could turn into a longshot. I don't know, it's immaterial now anyway.
