Vancouver - Edmonton

Magnus Paajarvi for Chris Tanev.

Yay or nay?

Canucks need a scoring prospect with the potential to break out and the Oilers have a surplus and limited space for Paajarvi.

I'd rather not, although value is probably close.

Making trades with a division rival is pretty unlikely.

Luongo and Raymond for MPS, Hemsky and a pick/prospect/WHY. I have no idea.

I have no idea who this is myself but for me I would hang onto PRV unless a deal is irresistable. I think he has a lot of upside and is still just getting started.

Tired of canuck fans propping Tanev up as a top 4 d-man. MPS will be a 30 goal scorer shortly.

Trying to figure out if it is the love in with Ballard or Tanev that some canuck fans have annoy me more

Very easy pass from Oilers pov. Tanev's are a dime a dozen.

Nobody has propped Tanev up as anything in this thread. MPS doesn't return a young, top 4 dman...

Are you also tired of Oiler fans propping MPS up as a 30 goal scorer?

As for the proposal, don't like it from the Canucks end. Vancouver is thin on the right side and Tanev looks well on his way to becoming a very strong defensive presence and should be a fixture in the Canucks top 4 for a long time. The guys development curve has been outstanding the last couple years and you just don't trade players on this type of trajectory IMO.

I don't really know much about Tanev but HF rated him a 6.5 B. The Oilers actually are pretty stacked for young talent at defense, so I think we'd pass. We need elite defensive guys, not more guys that could become solid bottom 4 guys.

Why would Edmonton trade Paajarvi when his value is at its lowest?

I do the same, but hf ratings are notoriously bad. I'd go as far as to say that Tanev is already a 6.5.

These all made me laugh out loud.

Have a read of the Canucks 2011-2012 scoring chances.. or maybe the Canucks best shot blockers?

Tanev, and players like Tanev (Marcel Goc comes to mind) - guys who aren't flashy and don't put up a lot of points - are the reason people undervalue players who quietly get the job done.

For what it's worth, MPS is in the same boat in Edmonton. He was one of their better forwards, but was a bit snakebitten and the Edmonton brass simply doesn't recognize things like that, because Tambellini and Lowe are stuck in the 1980s, where players like Eager and Hordichuk had value. MPS was Edmonton's 3rd best forward at controlling posession.

If that were the case the Oilers defense wouldn't be so atrocious.

Right hand shooting, right side dmen that can play a top 4 role are always in demand. Tanev is well on his way to filling that role and brings a combination of size, skating, skill and smarts that every team covets.

Tanev is the real deal. He's likely not going anywhere.

Players the Oilers have brought in in recent memory who are better than Tanev:

Tom Gilbert
Chris Pronger
Sheldon Souray
Lubomir Visnovsky
Ryan Whitney
Nick Schultz
Jeff Petry
Ladi Smid
Justin Schultz(?)

Like I said, dmen of this caliber or better are available. Not worth giving up MPS.
Oilers D next year:

Petry-Smid
N Schultz- Whitney
J Schultz- Klefbom
Peckham/Sutton/any old UFA

Tanev wouldn't be an upgrade on any of those. Despite typical HF misconception, Oilers dont need bottom half dmen. Only thing we'd give up good assets for is a #1.

I'll decline from a Canucks pov, from what I saw last year Tanev greatly complemented Ballard and succeeded when he was asked to step up into a top 4 role. If he works on his shot, his high hockey IQ will make him do very well for our team. I'm not entirely sold on MPS right now, I think the value is close but I would rather not swap as I believe that there is more risk involved with a prospect like MPS.

I am not a fan of this proposal. I could see Gillis trying something like this, maybe not with Edmonton but a team short on younger Dmen, and getting a big bodied forward in return.

However, I don't see the value with MPS has over, let's say, Kassian or Jensen. Much like a few previous posters have said Tanev isn't a clear cut improvement (yet) over their current D, MPS isn't a clear cut improvement on our young powerforwards (yet).

if your looking for a better defenseman, MPS won't get it done.

Oiler fans aren't arguing that we could get a better player for MPS. We're saying we don't want to trade him at this time. I'd probably trade a 2nd for Tanev or something like that, but heck no to trading MPS right now.

Neither will Tanev will for the Oilers, we already have a bunch of D in development and like someone else said we'd only give up an asset for a #1. MPS trade value is pretty low right now and he has potential to be a good/decent player.

I could make an exhaustive list of Canuck forwards over the last 5 years that are better than MPS. Does that deem MPS a 'dime-a-dozen' player as well?

I'm not saying this trade serves the Oilers need, I'm saying Tanev is well on his way to becoming a very good defenseman at the NHL level. Those players simply are not a dime-a-dozen.

Not sold on your logic here.

Bad match up, VAN needs Tanev, EDM doesn't.

Not sure MPS would be worth losing Tanev over compared to Jensen or Kassian

if I was an oiler fan I probably wouldn't make this trade either, wait for MPS to regain trading value before making a decision on whether to trade him or not. That's the hard part about a swap in prospects I guess.

solid proposal.

Tanev is a solid defensive top 4 d-man in the future.
MPS could be a solid 2nd liner

Nice deal for both imo

Won't Tanev be filling a more crucial role than MPS though? Does MPS even crack the top 9?

The Canucks are extremely thin on the right side. Removing Tanev from the mix only to add another tweener winger just isn't a trade off worth making at the moment IMO.

Don't see the need for Edmonton to do this either. Bad trade for both sides IMO.
