Vincent Lecavalier

On Bob McKenzie's 2013 draft preview on TSN, they showed a graphic that said Nathan MacKinnon would be the 5th QMJHL player to be drafted 1st overall in both the Q draft and the NHL draft, if that is indeed what happens next June.

The four players to do that have been Mario Lemieux, Pierre Turgeon, Alexandre Daigle and Sidney Crosby.

Which made me wonder....who was drafted before Vincent Lecavalier when he was 15? I assume his draft year was 1996, but I can't find anything by googling it. Anybody know?

Lecavalier was drafted fourth in 1996 into the QMJHL.

1st overall that year was defenseman Jonathan Girard, picked by Laval (went on to play for the Bruins)
Gregor Baumgartner was selected 2nd, also by Laval

Not 100% sure who was drafted 3rd

Thanks! I remember Girard.....I think he was in a bad car accident if I remember correctly, after he was drafted.

Lecavalier went 4th because he said that he doesn't want to play in the Q. He wanted to play in NCAA.

But, Rimouski took him in fourth place and magically, he decides he's gonna play with the Océanic.

Same thing happen with McKinnon. He was draft 1st overall by Baie-Comeau, but he doesn't want to play there.

I was wondering the same thing when I saw that. Lecavalier was a phenom out of Quebec, but I figured it had something to do with NCAA questions.

What was worst with lecavalier is that he was in the arena and when Rimouski announced his name, he came on the stage to accept his jersey. The draft was in Rimouski so he had it easy without anybody to boo him!
