Who would you have taken at the 26th overall?

I know it's a bit late for this, but if you were the GM, who would you have picked? I think it will be fun to bump this a few years down the road.

EDIT: Thanks for adding him.

I wouldn't say that, Collberg was a top 10 pick on several predraft rankings. He's my pick, he has a much higher ceiling imo.

Gaunce was definitely the safe choice, as well as one who adds toughness, but I was surprised that either was still around at 26.

Voted "other" (Gaunce).

I'll go on record as saying that 6 years from now, barring injury or trade, he'll be our 2nd line center, playing a good 2-way game and putting up around 60 pts. And he'll only be 24.

If he's still stuck behind Hank and Kesler, he'll probably be one of the best 3rd line centers in the league.

Definitely Gaunce. There really wasn't anyone else I wanted at that point...Collberg is someone who I liked as well though, but he was a distant second to Gaunce on my rankings. Did not see him being available this late.

Besides Gaunce, I would've taken Damon Severson of the Kelowna Rockets. Great Two-Way Defenseman.

I'm still bitter that we didn't take Severson in the second round. I hope Mallet can prove me wrong, but I was really high on this kid.

It's kind of sad we could've taken him with our 2nd round pick, but I have warmed up to Mallet, although I feel we could probably have gotten him in the 5th.

Frk did impress me at the wjc, he will be a good NHL player based on that small sample.

I really liked Severson, I think it's a shame that he dropped so much and that we passed up on him twice.

It was due to injuries that he dropped so much, much like a lot of the prospects this year.

I think I would stick with Gaunce but at the team I liked the idea of picking local boy Dalton Thrower.

No, he isn't. He's a very good two-way defenceman. Nothing about him climbs into the "great" category, or falls below "pretty good." He's a middle-of-the-road guy, the deluxe version of Taylor Ellington. It didn't surprise me at all that he fell to the bottom of the second, and it would've been a waste of a first-rounder to take him that early, even if an obvious pick like Gaunce hadn't been available.

Frk has a long long way to go before he can show he has the skill or the head for the NHL.

He has always had terrible conditioning, effort and discipline issues and he has started off the year on a pretty poor note in that regard yet again. I think he was picked in an appropriate spot in the draft, and it might still be a big risk there as he has not shown any signs of growing up. I was a believer at one point but it's been 3 years of this crap now, and still no improvement.

It's gotten to the point that I hope that the Mooseheads trade him, because if he keeps this up he will be a distraction and will take way too many (really really really) stupid penalties at key times.

Lard_Lad is right, players like Severson do tend to fall due to a lack of a defining feature to their game.

Couple things with that:

1. He's a Dman, so I think it comes more down to his development of the skills he does have. He'll have time to do that.

2. He's got enough going for him that I wouldn't compare him to a defensive Dman like Ellington. He's a 2way D, and not limited to the Dzone alone.

3. He's going to a great program. Kelowna, then to NJ's system. That alone increases his probabilities.

Mallet vs Severson will always be the debate. They are linked.

By the time the pick rolled around, I was chanting Gaunce's name.

If we hadn't picked him (or he hadn't been available), other guys I liked were Thrower, Collberg, Samuelsson and Matteau.

I liked Aberg over Collberg. But yes, at the time, I was yelling at my TV for the nucks to take Gaunce. Given he dropped, and the organizational need at C, it made complete sense.

I also liked the fact that he put up a PPG on a weak team in OHL. That was O'Reilly and Lake Erie all over again. As an aside, I like it when the team targets forwards from that league - the offense just seems to translate to the pros more often than not.

I liked Collberg the best, even over Gaunce, because he has mad skills, and we seem to be adept at developing Swedes into star players.(Sedins, Edler, and Jensen[if he sorta counts] and Tommernes tearing up the SEL)

He also significantly outperformed Forsberg at the WJC.

That's the danger - with the Rockets' track record of producing great defencemen, people put a premium on their D in the draft, and that'll mean some bad picks of guys who don't have what Weber, Myers, Gorges, et. al. had. In terms of Rockets precedents, the guy Severson reminds me of is Mike Card, who was a fringe first-round prospect going into his draft year, then tanked badly and wound up going in the 8th to Buffalo; he didn't get a second contract from the Sabres and apparently played in Italy last season. The size and skill level are pretty similar. If he doesn't have more drive than Card (which, granted, isn't a high standard), he won't have much of an NHL career.

Agreed with NJ, though. He's the kind of guy they make into serviceable, but unspectacular, NHL defencemen. It's a good fit for him.
