D'Amigo: "my [expletive] didn't stink"

http://www.tsn.ca/toronto/blogs/jonas_siegel/?id=406977 (Thanks Alazais)

Quote:
too high and mighty on the horse," he said, looking back. "Just trying to think my [expletive] didn't stink and felt like I could be making the team my first year. And I think that was a big problem going into it, definitely as a rookie."

Jerry D'Amigo has done a lot of growing up since his first training camp with the Leafs in the fall of 2010. Hype was booming for the sixth-round pick back then. A standout performance with Team USA at the World Juniors the previous winter had made him a popular sleeper selection for the Leafs opening day roster. All that sizzle quieted down in a hurry though, and by February, not only was D'Amigo not a Leaf but no longer a Marlie either, assigned to play with Kitchener in the Ontario Hockey League.
and then

Quote:
Only a week went by before the light burst on. "Something clicked in my head," said the now 21-year-old D'Amigo. "And I'm like, 'I'm not going to stay long in this league if I keep on going the way I'm going here.' That was one of the things that sat in my head and wanted to make me change.

"I wanted to show Toronto that I have more, [that] I'm not just an average guy with an average work ethic. I've got something to prove here and I'm going to do that."
He talks about changing his eating habits.

Good article.

Keon was considered one of the fastest skaters in the NHL, and one of the best defensive forwards of his era.[3] He would usually play against the opposing team's top centre, and developed a reputation for neutralizing some of the league's top scorers. In 197071, he scored eight shorthanded goals, setting an NHL record.

Pretty good article. Hope he can use what he learned from when he was a bit younger to be a better player. If he even makes the NHL, he has gotten farther than most 6th round picks.

I really believe D'Amigo will eventually find his way onto the Leafs bottom six and become a PK specialist in the next couple of seasons.

How can you not possibly like D'Amigo?

Great character guy who will play a bottom 6 role for us one day

He was ranked higher 3rd. rounder (67. Jerry D'Amigo, U.S. U-18 (USDP) )

http://www.tsn.ca/draftcentre/feature/?id=11810

IIRC McKeens had him 3rd. round.

For some reason he fell in the draft, but good for us.

Happens every draft. Nick Ebert was touted top 10 then slipped to the mid 60s and went last in the draft. There's always a reason for players to drop (especially at the age of 18) but I'm glad Jerry figured out that he wasn't the Chosen One and is working hard on being an integral part of the team.

Probably didn't help that he was a key player on 2 Gold Medal teams, and then won ROTY in the NCAA (Hockey East IIRC). So then he goes to the Marlies with all those awards and finds out he's a boy playing against men.

I had heard last year he had dropped his weight but if he's working harder now, then can we speculate he dropped body fat?

Once considered a top 10 overall pick by Bob McKenzie, Nick Ebert actually became "Mr Irrelevant" last 2012 draft as he was selected in the 7th round with the 30th selection (211 overall) and last pick in the entire draft by the Cup winning LA Kings.

D'Amigo had the numbers playing for the USA U18 ND team, but had a very awkward (bull-legged) skating style in his draft year, and its likely the main reason he fell to the Leafs in the 6th round.

Jerry has very much had the talent back then, and his skating today is at 100% improvement from the past and his hard work and effort and determination on the ice, will likely make him a sleeper pick to some day become an NHLer... I'd even bet my own money on him beating the odds of most 6th round selections and playing NHL hockey. IMO

Guy's a beast - should be a fixture in our bottom-6 for a while.

Jerry gets "it". He probably won't make the team this year but I think he will be among the first call ups and will make the team full time next year.

Great article, really like the kid. We have a tonne of wing depth at the moment (Kessel, Lupul, JVR, MacArthur, Kulemin, Kadri, Frattin, Brown, Komarov, etc.), not sure that he'll make the team this year, if there even is a "this year." However, he should be one of our top injury call ups, and I think he'll be an NHL regular in the future.

The first hockey player Rob Baxter would train at the BX Player Development Group in Binghamton, D'Amigo dug in with his workouts in the summer. He'd train for five days each week, cycling after a workout three times, hitting the track at least once, while getting outdoors as often as possible. For his five-foot-eleven frame, D'Amigo would ensure that his weight remained a sturdy 195 pounds, becoming leaner "and making sure my body was more fit."
I know it isn't Gary Roberts ...

It's not the trainer, it's the trainee. All top level trainers will provide great workout routines and great nutritional advice, it's up to the player to commit 100%.

His skill and work ethic on the PK will give him an advantage over other AHL players in making some bottom six in the Show.

He was dynamite last season. 100% every game. Hopefully he keeps it up because he'll be a real gem for the parent club.

When you're a bottom 5 team, there's always room for change.

Glad to see he actually did change.

He had quite the ego when he first turned pro out of college. In fact, when he was sent down to the Rangers from the Marlies, he showed up last minute to all teams events and he would come to games in jeans and a t-shirt.

Always happy to see something clicks in a young guys head before it's too late. It happened with Frattin, too, and he set the NCAA on fire.

Here's hoping that D'Amigo has a good season.

He could be good you know.

I'm hoping he does what he did at the WJC and the AHL playoffs-being
at the right places at all the right times.
