Impressive so far. Lets see if he plateaus off and stays at a pt./gm. or more pace or if he goes back down to where he was in years past. A little early for me to go tossing him into top 5 in 2013 draft. But at 17, he is definitely on the radar and will be put under the microscope for the entire year.
Only chance we'd have would be if the lockout went the entire season and then we got a little lucky with the draft lottery.
Which wouldn't be too farfetched. I wouldn't be surpriseda bit if we got top 10. Obviously, a little if we were top 5 or higher.
Honestly, I don't know whether we'd go for another elite forward talent or shore up the defense. I guess it depends on too many things.
On Barkov, what has failed to be mentioned is that he already has an NHL body. TSN has him listed at 6 foot 2 inches and 205 pounds. Thats pretty set already, undoubtedly he will gain more throughout his career.

any team that has won the stanley cup in the last 5 years loses 2 balls
this will give you your final ball count. the lowest you can have is 1 (ex. if your down to 2 balls and youve won the stanley cup in the past 5 years or any of the other ways to lose balls, you go down to 1, not 0).
panthers would have 4 balls with this system. started off w/ 2, received an additional 2 for missing the playoffs 4 times in past 5 seasons, lost none.
Based on other threads I have been checking out, we would get 4 balls based on above system math done below.

Barkov reminds me of JVR a bit. Great size, great at scoring goals at this point in their careers... But I'd rather take one of MacKinnon, Jones, Monahan, Shinkaruk, Nichushkin, or Pulock over Barkov at this point. Could change, though. Not set-in-stone against him or anything.. I just don't see anything special that lots of others are seeing.
He's got the size and the skill but he lacks speed and explosiveness. I've followed him close this season and he looks good for a 17 year-old kid in SM-liiga. I'd say he's a top3 pick if he avoids injuries.

Tomorrow going to see Barkov playing live first time this season, when his team Tappara is hosting Jokerit (featuring V. Filppula and Erik Karlsson). Hopefully he'll put up some points again...

Something dramatic has to happen if he falls out of top 5. He's quite firmly at 3rd place right now, that said knowing this'll be a very deep draft year...
Barkov is a huge humanbeing, an elite playmaker who'll be able to score too. I like how most of his goals come from the dirty areas. Some say he's got almost datsyukian hands... While that's a bit too much to say, it tells you something about his offensive abilities. Some say that he could be the first Finnish player to be drafted first overall. If he keeps scoring the way(well, I doubt he can) he is right now, that'll be the case.
For his age, he's excellent defensively as well. It's really hard to compare him to any current NHLer but he reminds me a bit of Joe Thornton. Even Mikko Koivu comes to mind when I think of some aspects of his game.

The guy on the right is a former nhler Ville Nieminen, who isn't the smallest guy either.
If they don't play this season... Well, he's not going to be picked by Minnesota.
