Of all the options floated out there, Highlanders is still the least terrible.

Awful. Hard to take the RedBlacks seriously.

After that Tomahawks debacle, I hope someone complains that it sounds too much like Redbacks.

'The Red & Black' would be an awesome name.

Think of the songs we could sing

No surprise, Hunt was just looking for validation when he threw it out there.

Don't worry guys, I'm going to claim its racist since I'm half-Indian, half-black. That name will be gone in no time!

Red Blacks is an awful name (and has a slightly offensive ring to it). But this is the kind of sophomoric thing that I would expect from this city. We just can't have nice things.

Comment was made very tongue-in-cheek. Completely disagreed with the TomaHawks outrage, and when this is inevitably protested the sports fan in me will cheer but the common sense in me will be rolling my eyes.

I'm not saying it is offensive, I'm saying it sounds super off to the ear. Maybe I'm crazy though. That's also possible.

I think a lot of this will be tied into the colour scheme, logo and mascot. The thing about RedBlacks, Red & Black, etc. is that it is a blank slate - you can make it into whatever you want in terms of logos and mascots. Get that right, and the name almost becomes secondary. Probably the best comparison would be the Cleveland Browns, who now have the Dog Pound in the end zone. The link between dogs and a team named after the former owner seems pretty tenuous, but it's there now, and is pretty cool...

I was gonna give the CFL a chance, but with this name, nope.

I don't want to rip on Jeff Hunt, cause the guy is obviously a smart business man, but this CFL name is just horrible. It sounds like a Rugby name.

The highlanders was by far the best suggestion out there. It seems like the majority of sports fans liked it the best as well.

Here's my thoughts. The CFL has failed in Ottawa, what, 3 times? Our city is known for it's fairweather sports fans. Just look at the Lynx. Ottawa broke triple 'A' attendance records in, I think, season 3 of the franchise... then 4-5 years later, the team was gone due to lack of support.

If you're a business man who is trying to make a business succeed that has already failed 3 times... why the hell would you start yourself behind the 8 ball with such a terrible, and weird name like that? You would THINK that bringing up something like the Highlanders (for it's military history.. and the fun they could have with the movies as well) would start you off so much better.

It seems like now Hunt is going to have to focus his efforts on trying to convince the public that the redblacks is a good name, when he could be using his time marketing a strong name. It just doesn't make sense.

If you're staying away because of the name I doubt you were ever going to support them anyways.

The CFL originated from Rugby. These are Ottawa's colours. It's very puzzling that so many people are making a huge deal about this.

It all comes down to the Internet age, where too many people have something to say. Especially the ones that really don't care, but what to throw their 2 cents in (not saying that is you in this case, but in general).

Look, could you image if ever leagues had to do a re-boot of sorts are re-name all there teams?

Goodbye Edmonton Eskimos, Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Chicago Blackhawks, Montreal Canadiens, Washington Redskins...etc.

Part of my point is we'd lose a lot of teams had have history attached to their names. The other point is, it takes time to build a brand. A winning team and longevity will build the "Redblacks" brand.

Is this the first time a sports team is essentially inventing their own word as a team name? Redblacks from what i understand is not recognized in the english language as a proper word, Red and Black both are and as has been stated directly links to the city. Any other teams out their just make up a word which has never been used before in the language to call themselves?

Teams combine existing words all the time. See the Carolina RailHawks, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, the Evansville IceMen, the Fayetteville FireAntz, the Mississippi RiverKings.
