Week of October 29th-November 4th: Sunday Papers (Antti Miettinen off to Finland)

Sunday, November 4th Jets, CBA and General NHL news

Note: During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces, in Canada and around the world. With their “Mo’s”, these men raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and male mental health initiatives. If you’d like to help the Illegal Curve team as we raise money and awareness you are welcome to do so; Dave, Ezra & Drew

Jets & Affiliate news:

Helsingin Sanomat: Antti Miettinen has signed with HPK and is off to Finland. Using google translate we can see that he is returning to a team he last played for in 2002-03

TSN: Postma stars in IceCaps overtime win against Sharks. The Caps got the benefit of a goal by Worcester being called off with 64 seconds left in the 3rd period.

Reporter Herald: Eagles finish weekend strong. Colorado has climbed out of the basement with a pair of wins this weekend. Big man Cody Sol got his 1st goal for the Jets ECHL affiliate and Michael Forney had a hat trick.

CBA news:

USA Today: Late-night session to lead to talks early this week. Perhaps both sides needed a cooling off period as yesterday Bill Daly and Steve Fehr met for a significant period of time, and appear to be getting somewhere.

Globe and Mail: The NHL and its players union have resumed talks. Makes sense. Waste two weeks not talking, cancel the Winter Classic and then decide to resume talks.

The Province: NHL wants players to pay for its mistakes. Yes but if we had less teams perhaps all those players who are currently on an NHL teams 4th line making close to a million dollars would find themselves in the AHL making significantly less.

Sportsnet: NHL lockout forces AHL to cut outdoor game. While the AHL has been the beneficiary of the excess NHL players, the lockout still has had some ramifications on the lower league.

NHL news:

USA Today: Phoenix Coyotes’ Paul Bissonnette gets pranked. Hilarious prank by Mike Cammalleri. The line by Bissonnette when asked what team does he play for must have fans in Quebec excited. The security guard asks “Who do you play for?” Bissonnette says in response “Phoenix, well maybe Quebec soon”.

CFL news:

Illegal Procedure: Winnipeg Blue Bombers Papers. If you are a fan of CFL football, check out our other site, which gives you all the latest Bombers & CFL news. The Bombers closed out Canad Inns Stadium in style with a big victory over the Montreal Alouettes. What are your best memories from the stadium?

Monday Papers

Monday, October 29th Jets, CBA and General NHL news

Jets, Affiliate & local news:

Illegal Curve: EHC Red Bull München signs Blake Wheeler. We have confirmed with his agent that Blake Wheeler is off to Germany following his 1 goal and 3 assist performance at the charity hockey game (see below) that took place in Minnesota yesterday.

The Telegram: IceCaps can’t deliver a Sunday punch. Norfolk’s goalie played extremely well in leading his team to a 38 save shutout over the Ice Caps.

CBA news:

Minneapolis Star-Tribune: Suter backtracks on comments. The Suter comments start with the 2nd half of the article. It is clear the frustration is boiling over for many players, leading many to spout off without giving thought to the ramifications. End of day, players and owners are going to have to work together and in Suter and Leipold's case, that will be for over a decade, so probably best not to burn too many bridges.

USA Today: Jack Johnson rips NHL owners on linked site. About the only fault I can find in Johnson’s post is he has to know that there was zero chance the owners would allow the season to start without an agreement in place (especially given what Fehr did in baseball in 1994). However the part about signing contracts in ‘good faith’ is absolutely correct and he has every right to be pissed off about that aspect of current negotiations.

NHL news:

Minneapolis Star-Tribune: NHL stars make charitable use of idle lockout time. Good for the players to raise money for a very worthwhile cause.

Edmonton Sun: Young Oilers boys on the bikes. These Oilers are going to be downright scary in the next couple of years as they continue to develop a chemistry together.

For the Jets, CBA and General NHL news click here.

Illegal Curve Hockey Show replay:

Part 1: Intro, the week in CBA negotiations. CBA negotiations. Interview with Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch. John Davidson named President of Hockey Operations for the Columbus Blue Jackets. The New York Islanders will move to Brooklyn’s Barclay Center in 2015. CHLPA threatens to sue CHL clubs over “sweatshop” conditions.

Part 2: Interview with John Davidson, President of Hockey Operations for the Columbus Blue Jackets. Recap of interview with John Davidson. The Edmonton Arena saga continues (yes, it’s a saga). Hockey Canada announces concussion app. NHL News & Notes. Rapid Fire, Cheers & Jeers.

CFL news:

Illegal Procedure: Winnipeg Blue Bombers Papers. If you are a fan of CFL football, check out our other site, which gives you all the latest Bombers & CFL news. Time to switch focus from the Bombers playoff lifeline to the final week of CFL football at Canad Inns Stadium.

Tuesday Papers

Tuesday, October 30th Jets, CBA and General NHL news

Jets, Affiliate & local news:

theScore: Winnipeg Jets electrical guitar. For our more musically inclined readers, check out this electric guitar with some Jets representation.

TSN: Jets fans having hockey taken away once again. It seems unbelievable that just a year ago we were enjoying the glow of the NHL returning to Winnipeg.

Star Phoenix: Lukas Sutter ready for a new beginning. It has not been a banner start to the season for the Jets pick in 2012 so far. Left off the Subway Series roster he is trying to regain the spark he had last season.

Winnipeg Sun: Scheifele finding stride in OHL. Looking at the lockout with a glass half full perspective, the Jets 2011 first round choice has continued to flourish under Dale Hawerchuk.

Winnipeg Sun: Jets lace up to support Children’s Hospital. Andrew Ladd was tweeting that with Tanner Glass participating, we might be in for a GST reunion.

Hockey Prospectus: Top 50 under 23. The Jets had 3 crack the roster.

CBA news:

Minneapolis Star-Tribune: Star Tribune sits down with NHLPA Executive Director Donald Fehr. Russo gets a nice 1 on 1, although Fehr is his usual ‘keep things close to the vest’ self.

Edmonton Journal: Bettman’s name is mud but he don’t care. Adler is bang on with this column. The commissioner has a mandate and regardless of what people think of him personally, he doesn’t get paid based on good will.

New York Times: If canceled, NHL will not reschedule Winter Classic. Nothing says terrible PR like cancelling what has become one of the biggest money makers for the NHL each year.

NHL news:

Ottawa Citizen: Fritsch will take Ottawa Senators with him on PGA Tour. A nice honour for the Ottawa local and a smart move by the Senators to increase their brand awareness.

TSN: Flyers’ Simmonds the target of racism in Czech League game. Simply deplorable. How in this day and age people can still talk like this, I simply cannot understand.

For the Jets, CBA and General NHL news click here.

CFL news:

Illegal Procedure: Winnipeg Blue Bombers Papers. If you are a fan of CFL football, check out our other site, which gives you all the latest Bombers & CFL news. TNot a big surprise but the latest news surrounds fate of Bombers GM, who will start at QB in final game at Canad Inns Stadium and latest from new IG Field.

Wednesday Papers

Wednesday, October 31st Jets, CBA and General NHL news

Jets, Affiliate & local news:

Winnipeg Sun: Time’s right for Wheeler to take flight. Without much doing, the Minnesota native will jet off to Germany today and start game action on Friday.

theScore: Winnipeg Jets electrical guitar. For our more musically inclined readers, check out this electric guitar with some Jets representation.

Reporter Herald: Colorado Eagles’ Trent Daavettila breaks through. The ECHL veteran was brought in to help with the Eagles scoring and it appears that his early season drought might be over.

CBA news:

National Post: NHL Players’ Association shows no signs of fracture this time around. If there is dissension in the ranks, it has been muted.

Globe and Mail: Players get escrow cheques. Now that the players have staved off the bill collectors for a bit, it seems likely that they will be less inclined to be getting back to the bargaining table.

Globe and Mail: NHL could shoot itself in the foot by cancelling Winter Classic. This would be surprising if the NHL hadn’t already shot itself in the head with its current (or lack thereof) bargaining tactics.

Chicago Sun-Times: Difficult to care about sports work stoppages. And this from a market like Chicago. Imagine what is happening in other, less traditional hockey environments.

Montreal Gazette: Time to take back our game. Some radical suggestions by Hickey on how the game can be brought back to reality.

NHL news:

Yahoo: Tyler Bozak joins NHL Halloween blackface club as Michael Jackson. Seems the twitter universe is all a twitter with outrage over Bozak’s choice of costume. While it seems apparent that he meant this as a tribute, many viewed the costume as inappropriate.

CFL news:

Illegal Procedure: Winnipeg Blue Bombers Papers. If you are a fan of CFL football, check out our other site, which gives you all the latest Bombers & CFL news. Brink to start, what would you do if you were the Bombers GM and many other articles as we are mid way thru the Bombers final week of the regular season.

Thursday Papers

Thursday, November 1st Jets, CBA and General NHL news

Note: Today is the first day of Movember. During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces, in Canada and around the world. With their “Mo’s”, these men raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and male mental health initiatives. If you’d like to help the Illegal Curve team as we raise money and awareness you are welcome to do so; Dave, Ezra & Drew. Things kick off in Winnipeg with a big shave off starting at 2:30 pm today at Rudy’s downtown.

Jets, Affiliate & local news:

Muse: IceCaps meet Admirals in a spooky series. The Caps were very good at sweeping series last season, so this early trend of splitting is likely worrisome for coach McCambridge and company.

Reporter Herald: Colorado Eagles seeing plenty of players from St. John’s in 2012-13. Not surprisingly the lockout in the NHL is causing a downward effect of AHL talent to the Jets ECHL club.

CBA news:

Winnipeg Sun: NHL taking fans and their money for granted. With hardcore hockey fans this is expected but the long term ramifications for the fair weather fans will be interesting.

National Post: Fans should make NHL pay if Winter Classic is cancelled. Why should the Winter Classic matter to a Winnipeg Jets or any other fans? Sure they will likely watch the game, but I a bit mystified as to why this game should matter more than the 10+ home games NHL fans have already lost. The Winter Classic is a money maker for the league and players not the fans, so why should they give a hoot if it is cancelled?

Globe and Mail: Seeds of the lockout sown seven years ago and for that, both sides. He is absolutely right. Both sides are to blame. Show up to the bargaining table without any preconditions and start the negotiations. The current level of intransigence by both sides is practically criminal.

TSN: Could NHLers be fired if they get hurt playing? Not exactly cheap to have your contract insured but worth the price in order to ensure that if you get injured you have some back-up.

NHL news:

Toronto Star: Hockey Night in Canada book looks back at 60 years of NHL broadcasting. If you are looking for a holiday gift this seems ideal for any hockey fan.

For the Jets, CBA and General NHL news click here.

CFL news:

Illegal Procedure: Winnipeg Blue Bombers Papers. If you are a fan of CFL football, check out our other site, which gives you all the latest Bombers & CFL news. How the Bombers can be fixed is the focus today.

Illegal Procedure: ‘Interim’ tag removed and Tim Burke named 29th Head Coach of Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Do you like this move by the Bombers?

Illegal Procedure: A Season on the Brink: Regression. It has been a banner year...in terms of steps backwards.

Friday Papers

Friday, November 2nd Jets, CBA and General NHL news

Note: During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces, in Canada and around the world. With their “Mo’s”, these men raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and male mental health initiatives. If you’d like to help the Illegal Curve team as we raise money and awareness you are welcome to do so; Dave, Ezra & Drew

Note II: Tune into the Illegal Curve Hockey Show tomorrow as we have a slightly modified show starting at 12:30 pm to 3 pm as the guys will have 2.5 hours of hockey talk on TSN Radio 1290. Guest: Bob Duff (Windsor Star).

Jets & Affiliate news:

Illegal Curve: Lockout audio. Spoke with Jim Slater & Bryan Little about potential Winter Classic cancellation as well as their Movember Mo's.

CBA news:

The Detroit News: Same Winter Classic should be reset for 2014 in Detroit. If the Winter Classic is indeed cancelled today as is suspected, then there is no question that these two same teams should be given the first opportunity in 2014.

Ottawa Citizen: NHL to have ‘talk’ with Sens owner over comments. It isn’t just the players who are passionate about the game. Of course Melnyk's passion is going to cost him a conversation with the league and a potential fine.

Arizona Sports: Lockout especially tough for Doan, Coyotes. Older players like Doan know they are losing money that they will never get back. Even worse is the fact that prospective Coyotes owner Greg Jamison doesn’t appear any closer to buying the team.

Toronto Star: Mathieu Schneider floats idea of capped escrow payments. The good thing is its a new idea being put forth, although without face to face meetings, won’t have much of an impact.

CBC: Coach’s Corner star says deal needs to happen by Jan. 1. Don Cherry doesn’t sound very optimistic about a deal getting done and at the current pace of negotiations, his pessimism is reasonable.

NHL news:

Toronto Star: Markham’s NHL-size arena project losing support. The project might be on shaky ground as some of its previously most ardent supporters might be abandoning ship.

Globe and Mail: Laraque leaves as junior-hockey union drive on brink of collapse. Could this have gone any worse for Laraque and company?

For the Jets, CBA and General NHL news click here.

CFL news:

Illegal Procedure: Winnipeg Blue Bombers Papers. If you are a fan of CFL football, check out our other site, which gives you all the latest Bombers & CFL news. All the talk is the retention of the Bombers brass and the induction on Milt Stegal into the Hall of Fame.

Saturday Papers

Saturday, November 3rd Jets, CBA and General NHL news

Note: During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces, in Canada and around the world. With their “Mo’s”, these men raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and male mental health initiatives. If you’d like to help the Illegal Curve team as we raise money and awareness you are welcome to do so; Dave, Ezra & Drew

Note II: Tune into the Illegal Curve Hockey Show today as we have a slightly modified show starting at 12:30 pm to 3 pm as the guys will have 2.5 hours of hockey talk on TSN Radio 1290. Guest: Bob Duff (Windsor Star). Chris Botta (Sports Business Journal).

Jets & Affiliate news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Career-killer. There could be a massive roster change for the Jets. So many things might happen and that uncertainty remains while the lockout continues.

IceCaps official site: IceCaps stymied by Pirates. Not a great start to the road trip last night as the offence failed to click once again.

Reporter Herald: Colorado Eagles work in win. And there goes the losing streak for the Jets ECHL affiliate on the strength of 6 goals in the victory.

Hockey’s Futures: Patrice Cormier, Paul Postma among Winnipeg Jets prospects looking to have a strong 2012-13 season. A look at the prospects in the system.

Illegal Curve: Jets update season ticket holders. The Winnipeg Jets provided their season ticket holders with an update on the lockout.

Illegal Curve: Lockout audio. Spoke with Jim Slater & Bryan Little about potential Winter Classic cancellation as well as their Movember Mo’s.

CBA news:

Globe and Mail: Owners inject some hope with concession in ‘make-whole’ provision. But of course neither side is going to publicly blink for a bit longer.

CBC: NHL, players’ union close to resuming talks. So they waste 2 weeks, cancel the Winter Classic and then decide to have talks. Just brilliant.

Globe and Mail: Why the NHL pulled the plug. Shoalts gives a breakdown of the events that necessitated, at least in the league’s mind, the cancellation of the NHL’s marquee event.

Globe and Mail: NHL makes another PR blunder by blowing up Winter Classic. From a PR point of view, the only thing worse is cancelling the entire season and even that might not be the case considering many casual hockey fans become aware of the fastest game on ice when HBO starts covering the lead up to the New Years game.

NHL news:

National Post: Markham’s NHL dreams take a hit, courtesy of deputy mayor. As more and more questions get asked it appears the arena in southern Ontario might not be as close to fruition as previously thought.

CBC: Georges Laraque resigns from CHLPA over controversy. Looks like he is going out in style, with guns blazing.

For the Jets, CBA and General NHL news click here.

CFL news:

Illegal Procedure: Winnipeg Blue Bombers Papers. If you are a fan of CFL football, check out our other site, which gives you all the latest Bombers & CFL news. Today is the final day for the Blue at Canad Inns Stadium, for real this time.
