Offensively the 2013 team wins hands down. Your looking at 2 point a game guys if not better and a plethora of 2nd-3rd line tweeners with selke center capable of scoring goals. While 2003 had 2 point a game guys at best 3 2nd liners(Morrison and the sedins) and the rest of the team was composed of lower end 3rd n 4th line players in terms of offense.
however, I like the look of the 2003 roster, it just feels safer in the bottom 6 having guys like linden, chubarov, Cooke, Keane and may. they all knew thier roles and played them to a tee and i still believe if they had a goalie of loungos caliber it could've gone a lot farther into the playoffs.
So far neither in 2013 neither Sedin is a PPG, and it's not clear they will be. Kesler is also a huge question mark for 2013. Unless we're also going to mix-and-match the best pieces of WCE from over the years, IMO those need to be taken into account in a year to year comparison.
The two best lines/combos (tough to include Kassian in that, but I mean the Sedins) in our team's history go head to head. Tough to call a winner there.
For the second line, you'd think Sedins at first blush, but at the time I think they were worse than Kesler is now. King was a flash in the pan, so edge to 2013 here.
The third line is tough to call as well. Linden is much better than Schroeder at the 3rd line position, but Burrows is much, much better than Cooke and Hansen is better than Keane (at the time). Call it a draw?
I prefer the 2003 4th line for that role. Ruutu was an absolute beaut, May is one of my favourite Canucks, and Chubarov was gone too soon. The 2013 guys definitely have a shot, more of a matter of preference.
All in all, a much closer comparison than I would have originally thought. I think I take 2013 by a hair, but it's close!
