Spezza took a perfect feed from Marian Hossa, split the Buffalo defence and beat Buffalo goalie Ryan Miller with a backhander at 2:46 of the 4-on-4 session to send the Baby Sens' fans home happy.
"It was a nice way to end it here," said Spezza. "I just think it's great for the fans. They were good to me when I was here and it's nice to get the win. It was nice to play with Marian Hossa and Petr Schastlivy. They're both excellent players.
"Hossa just gave me the perfect pass. The one thing about Hossa is he's so powerful. The nice thing about this team is we have so many talented players and it doesn't matter who you play with. You're going to get chances."
"They're both skilled players. I thought they did a good job," said Martin. "But we're going to try a lot of different combinations. We're trying to evaluate people right now and see exactly where they fit in."
Winger Jody Hull, who scored the Senators' other goal, was impressed with what he witnessed. Spezza and Hossa caused fits for the Buffalo defence and they had plenty of other opportunities to put the puck in the net.
"You've got two pretty good players there," said Hull. "Marian has come into camp and he's going at full speed, while Jason is a guy with a ton of talent. I thought they both looked excellent."
"That's good for a first game. A nice start. He's a pretty strong player and I'm happy with the way we played together," said Hossa.
