Volchenkov to Carolina

I'm a canes fan, and I was thinking when the lockout ends we could use a hitting, shot-blocking defenseman. What would it take to get Anton Volchenkov from the devils? Jokinen? Larose and a mid round pick? More? Less?

Value would be more than what you offered but I doubt NJ is trading him.

That's what I was afraid of. Im guessing you guys want someone to fill the void left by Praise and the price is probably too high for us.

He probably wouldn't waive, but, hypothetically, we'd want Jokinen.

Really? I feel like Jokinen is underrated. As an impartial hockey fan, I wouldn't be willing to give up Jokinen for Volchenkov

I'd hate to give him up, but we need a guy like volchenkov. Enough to give up Jussi? Well see. The irony of him playing for the devils after the 09 playoffs would be classic.

I would love Jokinen for Volchenkov, but I doubt Carolina does that.

The Devils are in a position to trade one of their defenders, that being said, defenseman have a lot less value to us, especially compared to forwards. Both on the NHL level and in our prospects, our forwards aren't anything to be proud of right now. Jokinen for Volchenkov would be a pipe dream.

If a deal was to go through, first off, Volchenkov would have to be willing to waive his NTC. Let's hypothetically say he does, Devils would want either an NHL forward or a young forward that's ready to break into the NHL in the next year or so. Depending on how good the forward is, the Devils would be willing to receive picks as well, but they aren't in a position to add picks into a deal. The Devils could probably blow this up into a bigger deal and add a defensive prospect to the mix, and receive a better package too.

How about Jan Mursak for Volchenkov?

from the outside, i think jokinen is fair, but i dont think a-train would waive. From everything i know it's NYC, back to ottawa, or russia for him.

I also doubt Volch would waive his NTC. The Devils aren't particularly in a rush to get rid of him anyway.

Volchenkov for Jokinen actually would make a lot of sense for the Canes after acquiring Semin this offseason. Devs would probably need to add a low tier prospect or late round pick.

Canes could roll out a lineup along these lines if the deal was made:

Semin - E. Staal - Ruutu
Tlusty - J. Staal - Skinner
Bowman - Welsh - LaRose
Nodl - Brent - Dwyer

Pitkanen - Faulk
Gleason - Volchenkov (think a better version of the Gleason-Allen pairing from last year)
Harrison - Mcbain/Corvo

That said though, as many others have said, highly doubt Anton waives his NTC. What would the Devs want for Tallinder?

Volchenkov+3rd? Obviously, only if he waives.

And Gleason-Volchenkov is a damn good 2nd pairing. Wow.

That would be more then fair. I was thinking more a 5th to be honest.

I have a lot more faith in Volchenkov then a lot of people though, would be a perfect physical stay-at-home presence to put with Gleason for a shutdown pairing.

Exactly. And moving jokinen actually opens a spot for bowman. Also, volchenkov strengthens our defense tremendously, could help us compete for the SE title.

I know we came to a consensus on the Volchenkov deal, but what would you guys give up for Tallinder? He's significantly better on the puck than Volch is, but he doesn't use his body nearly as often as he should. Nevertheless, he's a big player with superb mentoring abilities.

2nd+ IMO, not sure what the plus would be or if it's even necessary, but it sounds relatively fair.

That's fair as well. What would we have to add to get Jokinen?

If you want jokinen, you're gonna have to hand over volchenkov.

I'm aware. But Volch does have a say in it as well, with his NTC. That's why I inquired about Tallinder.

Any other Canes fans interested in Hank?

NTC doesn't mean much when your GM is coming at you saying that you're not a part of the team's future plans. NHLers are proud people, that's why I don't put too much stock in these clauses. Most of these guys are smart and move quickly when they feel it's time to.

Seems like Volchenkov would fit in Carolina's plans, but to be honest, it's also the 1st defence-man I'd trade as a Devils fan. I hope to be wrong but I fear he's on the verge of regressing big time now, So Jokinen for Volchenkov+pick is a wonderful proposition to me.

If I were a Canes fan I would trade for Greene or Tallinder instead. Better all-around game with still good, underrated defence.

From the sounds of it, they want Volchenkov for his style of play. Tallinder or Greene don't hold much value to them because they already have players that play like them.

I wouldn't mind a Jokinen for Volchenkov deal. Fits our needs pretty well, it's hard to give up a guy like Volchenkov who plays a very rare style, but at the same time, we can afford to do it with our defensive depth and retaining Salvador.
