James Neal for Alex Goligoski

Flashing back, Did the Pens rob the stars?

Imagine if Dallas still had Neal, their offense would be incredible.

ericsson, Benn, Neal, whitney, ryder, roy, jagr, morrow

Neither. It wasn't even, but it wasn't robbery either

Didn't they get Niskanen, too? Or was that another deal?

The Penguins got the better end of the deal, but in no way was it robbery. Goligoski's pretty good, and Neal definitely benefited from playing on a line next to Malkin.

I'd still make that trade today as a Stars' fan. Neal needed that trade to not only get to play with better linemates then he ever had here, but also as a wakeup call. He was never going to score 40 in Dallas.

No robbery at all, both teams benefited from the trade.

We'd also have no real PMD's on our roster. Dallas desperately needed a puckmover on the backend.

No. I believe the Pens won the deal, but I don't think it was a steal. I think it was a good deal for both teams as well. And Neal is one of my favourites in the league.

I thought the Penguins won the deal the day of the trade, I'd call it a win without Niskanen being a part of the trade. Now obviously with how great Neal has been playing alongside Malkin, the deal looks so much better for the Penguins.

Wasn't terrible for Dallas, but it defiantly was better for the Penguins.

Since this trade went down I thought the Penguins got the better of the deal. I laughed when I heard about the trade.

I never liked Goligoski very much, he may be a lot better than Niskanen, but not enought to warrant getting James Neal even when Neal was a 25 goal scorer.

Neal having the season he did makes it look even worse for Dallas.

You'd do it just to help a guy score more on another team?

I don't see how Dallas got robbed...put anyone with Malkin and his point totals would sky rocket. I'm sure Dallas knew that...and they also knew that they had zero PMD's.

Benn and Eriksson > Neal. They added Jagr, and added Ryder the year before to replace Neal's offense. Let's not forget that if Neal was in Dallas..he could only score 80 points in his dreams (his highest was like 55).

No, it wasn't robbery at all. Yes, Penguins got the better end, but man, Goligoski was one of my favorites for sure. I hate trades like that, but it did improve both teams.

I'm really sick of this topic.

Niskanen had a good year playing with Zubov, but after Zubov left it was all down hill for him. He was one of the go to scape goats for Stars fans. He desperately needed a change in sceneory. Neal was a nice player when he was here, but he was also one of the most streaky players I have ever seen. I'm not saying Brad Richards is as good as Malkin, but Neal was being set up by him non stop. He would completely disappear for multiple games.

Dallas really, really needed a young puck moving defenseman (to replace d production lost in 08 after Zubov left). Goligoski was exactly what we needed and we just signed him to a very reasonable contract (4 for 18.4). He is now a core member of the team.

Remember how everyone was saying the Stars "won" this deal at the end of the 10-11 season? Goose had put up 15 pt's in 23 games in Dallas and Neal scored 6 pt's (1G, 5A) in Pitt's final 20 games. Now all of a sudden when Neal plays with the best player in the world, he has a career high in offensive numbers, the deal was a steal.

This was not a "steal" or a "robbery."

It was absolutely robbery on the Pens' and Shero's part. It was on the day the trade was made and it really has only gotten worse.

The Stars actually didn't need a PMD at all. They already had one in Larsen, who is already better than Goligoski.

Most new GMs don't survive making a mistake of this magnitude. But Nieuwendyk has shown some signs of turning it around since then. It'll still go down as one of the worst deals in franchise history.

I would not consider it a robbery, but it is far away from being an even trade, so i voted for "Yes they did"

We needed one right then for a playoff push, and Larsen definitely wasn't ready for that role. Even still, I'm not sure he is. And you can't build a defense with just one PMD either.

And you can't honestly tell me Neal was ever going to be more than a streaky 25-30-55 guy here. Sure, he did have a couple stretches where he just dominated, but those were far from the norm. And after his suspension, I always felt like his days in Dallas were numbered.

I think a good question to ask is, if you don't think this trade qualifies as a robbery for Pittsburgh, is there a trade involving active players that you think does?
