Teemu Selanne

No I don't want to trade for him...

Well I do...but not in this thread.

I just watched him on HNIC After hours and was just struck again at how much of a classy guy he is. Some stuff I didn't know...was that when he came to Winnipeg last season, he stayed in the Lobby until 4am signing autographs for people and didn't actually leave the lobby the next day until he had to get changed for the game.

Hrudey and Oakes really pressed him hard about Winnipeg, and Teemu said that his return ranks right near the top of highlights of his career.

Also...he still plays with a wooden stick. Unless I heard that wrong. He said that Getzlaf and Perry would still be in the minor leagues if not for their sticks lol.

Just wanted to share that with you guys.

He said that he had been one of the last players in the league to use wooden sticks. Not that he still uses them. At least that is what I understood.

I think you might be right, although I think the stick he does use is rather plain. He said he can hit the puck much harder and faster with one if Getzlaf's or Perry's sticks...but likes the feel of his own.

The greatest tragedy of the last year of the original Jets was that Selanne wasn't here.

Yup. The new owners shipped him out like a thief in the night.

Pretty much. You basically spend the whole game screaming at the TV the Selanne is open at the half boards and if you don't cover him he'll score...and he does...a lot.

So many memories. I remember that afternoon 'Finland Day' game vs Gretzky, Kurri and the Kings like it was yesterday. The video is worth a look.

If you were just looking at the top 4 players you could swear the year was 1999.

Saturday night was "Old Guys Night" in the NHL. On NHL Network the 3 stars of the night were Jagr, Selanne, and Kovalev.

That's really funny.

I saw one of the tweets that commenting on how Selanne used to curve his stick with nothing but rocks and simple tools...and I was like...wow I'm old. I remember his rookie season lol

Yeah I really enjoyed that segment and wished he was on it the whole time instead of splitting it with Alain Vigneault. Love the guy's attitude and hope he continues beyond this season. I especially liked the part when he said if fans are lining up at 3am for autographs, they all deserve it.

Had there not been a lock out, I was planning on following the Flames' California road trip in March when they were playing San Jose, Anaheim, and LA on the original schedule. The main purpose of doing it this year was so watch Teemu on home ice just in case this is his last season.

His post game interview was vintage Teemu, oozing class all the way. Of course, anytime Teemu says anything about Wpg I get the warm fuzzies.

I loved his joke "If Getzlaf or Perry used my stick they'd be in the minors".

Ugh... Mark Lee!

So many memories! I remember that game. I got my $11 Jets tickets and brought along my newspaper insert. "Winnipeg's Wonder Kids" (Sponsored by Wonder Bread)

Every time Teemu or Teppo were on the ice we raised the Finnish flag on the other side of the insert.

There is no denying that Teemu Selanne will go down as one of the greatest of the greats. He was the complete package of what a hockey player can be. I think we forget a bit however just how great Phil Housley was that year. If he hadn't been feeding Teemu I don't think he scores close to 76 goals. Phil had 18 goals and 79 assists for 97 points that year (also was a minus -14 ). He's the reason I wear #6

Hey! This thread is about Teemu! You take that Housely fan boy crap to another thread!

In all seriousness...great Defenseman. You don't score that many goals by yourself.

I can tell you first hand Teemu doesn't use a wood stick.
I was one of the people who caught his stick after last years game, its composite.

I'm guessing he was talking about the profile of the stick, not the material.

Most players use a composite one-piece. Teemu uses a two-piece (composite shaft, wood blade)

Anyway, that's pretty damn cool that you were one of the people who caught it! I hope some kid got to keep it!

The current Jets can learn a thing or two from Teemu.

Lockout rust?

This guy is 42 and was a machine last night.

No kidding, then there's Evander Kane at half his age huffing and puffing, leaning on his knees.

Funny story.
A group of us in section 117 caught it. And obviously everyone was pulling at it, I ended up being the person with sole possession of it.
I figured however that since I have to sit near these people for 5 years it wouldn't be wise to just keep the stick, when in all likelihood I wasn't the first person to grab it.
So I proposed giving it to a little kid standing near by, the general response was "NO ****ING WAY! GIVE ME THAT ****ING STICK".
At that point I realized I was dealing with a bunch of people who valued this stick waaaay to much.
I gave it to security, and pointed out who I thought was the first to grab it and told them to deal with.
