If you could go as far back as the 2011 entry draft as Brian Burke what would you have done? Most people complain about all the players acquired last summer so what would you do instead?
I'd redo the Lombardi/Franson trade.
I'd redo the Connolly signing (it's only 2 years and he was the best center available. I also don't believe he is as bad as people make him out to be. Just he plays 17 minutes a night and in every situation (ES, PP and PK).
I would have traded CMac well his value was at its highest and moved Connolly to the wing or inserted Kadri/Colborne.
I probably would have traded Franson as well after reinking Liles and having Gardiner prove he is a much better PP option. I'm not upset Franson is still here though.
I'd redo the JVR trade.
Not sure I would have bought Armstrong out. Probably would have went the re-entry route.
I'd redo the McClement signing.
I'd have tried to sign a veteran D who can play the PK to a one year deal who can be flipped at the deadline if we sucked again this year (Roszival, Hannan)
Get K+K for Richards deal done. 2011 draft?
Fire Wilson, 2011 Entry Draft.
Bring Eakins up, 2011-2012 start of season.
Do the Vokoun deal right away.
Pick Jenner/Jensen and Biggs, 2011 Entry Draft.
Signed a shutdown dman. 2012 offseason.
Signed Grabovski for a shorter term, 2011 offseason.
Do the Connolly signing, 2011 offseason.
Trade away MacA, Franson, Connolly, Armstrong, Steckel for picks, 1st, high 2nd, 2nd, 3rd, 4th. 2012 TD.
Trade the picks gained to move up to 15th, then trade Colborne+15th for 10th, pick Forsberg/Grigorenko. 2012 Entry draft.
Drafted Nick Ebert in the 7th round, as he was considered a top 10 pick a year ago. 2012 entry draft.
Redo McClement, JVR/Schenn.

Would've traded MacA earlier, but not upset he's not traded.
other than that all the same things, Vokoun is not worth a 2 year deal(heavily in decline, wasnt that special last year) Connolly was worth the deal, still could be solid this year and at least gives us some depth offensively.
wouldnt fire wilson as we were doing quite well, although I wouldnt have hired wilson 4 years ago, he's not fit for a young building team, he's fit for an already built, elite goaltending team.
But there wasn't a person around who wanted Reimer gone last summer.
Actually, there were a few of us who wanted Reimer gone from the net (not from the team) for now. There were a few long, drawn out debate threads during last off-season about the Reimer vs Monster decision.
This makes little sense because hindsight makes everything seem better/worse. Players values have changed since that time but here we go:
- Traded Schenn after that great season when his value was sky-high.
- ^For fun sake, let's say Schenn + good prospect who won't play for a while + a pick for a very good second line winger
- Wouldn't have signed Connolly
- Still would've signed Steckel
- Re-signed Giguere to mentor Reimer
- Pulled the trigger on the rumored Kadri + Kulemin for Richards trade
- Still would've done the Lebda for Franson-Lombardi trade
- Fired Wilson, Called up Eakins
Holmgren asked for Kulemin and Kadri, Burke said he had to think about it, deal with LA was made before he got back to Burke.
That tells me Holmgren preferred the package from LA.
That's how I remember it too. Burke was right to only consider it at the time because Kulemin's value was so ridiculously high at the time that most posters were calling him a more integral piece to the team then Kessel.
- Fire Wilson (though I understand why we didn't)
- Keep Giguere and trade/waive Gustavsson (Always felt strongly about this)
- Not sign Connolly (His compete level and drive are not a match to where we're going with this team)
