There's a differnece between a 30 year old player who produced 60 points signing a 5 year contract vs a 21 year old player who produced 60 points signing a 5 year contract. In the first case, you're paying for more or less steady production, and a reasonably well known asset. In the other case, you're factoring in potential, and how much you think he'll improve over the duration of the contract.

Considering the linemates Kessel's had to work with in his first season and a half in TO, his contract has been a bargain so far.

Kessel's a beauty. I've got a cool story for you guys. I apologize in advance for its length.

So last night I went down to Fallsview Casino to kick back, lament about being hockey deprived and play some good old fashioned no limit poker. So early into my session my poker chips began to inevitably dwindle away, and so too did my attention to the game. I looked around the room trying to spot familiar faces and who do I see playing at a table across from mine but number 81 himself. I mentioned to a few of the players at my table that I was convinced it was him but they all seemed to shrug it off as drunken banter....And granted he was wearing a black toque and glasses so his face was slightly obstructed. But I know a Kessel when I see one. His distinct orange beard a dead giveaway! His underarmour sweater was another tell. So I immediately request a table change and finally hop on his table. As I sat down I jokingly asked the dealer whether the session fees were more expensive because Phil Kessel was at the table. And lo and behold it was Phil the Thrill. Of course it was, my hockey player-identifying vision is 20/20. He sat in seat 2 and I was in seat 6. We had a lengthy chat and he was surprisingly receptive to my questions and very social. He was with one of his buddies at the table, who apparently is an amateur poker player and writes weekly columns for the Toronto Sun; his name eludes me however. As for Phil, well, his poker skills left a lot to be desired...although the same could be said for mine. But it was a ton of fun. A few highlights: his favorite baseball team is the Yankees; his favorite player to watch is Datsyuk; he thinks basketball is incredibly boring, unless he's courtside; his favorite arena to play in was the Philips Arena in Atlanta. I sat with him at the table for about 4 hours, and I tried really hard to suppress my inner die-hard Leaf fanboy but as he was leaving I managed to get a picture with him and he signed my casino player's advantage card (which doesn't help to curb the impression that I may be a degenerate gambler) but it was the only thing I had on me that was autograph-able! The Toronto Media may sell his personality short, partially because they get paid in souls, but he's a very cool and friendly guy. He's a keeper, Leafs Nation! Unless of course Crosby's coming the other way in a trade!

He should no doubt be extended.....I'm only speaking to in my opinion what he will be seeking, and that is north of 8.5 million over 6 years.

Thats the thing with you "realists", rarely do you have a solid point, so you resort to putting words in peoples mouths, or trying to twist what they say.
Short term memory loss is not fun...

As usual?

Where did I ever write this?

And you seem to forget that the initial post I was responding to simply implied that the two Leafs prospects were better because they had more points.

I guess you loved Mike Green before his injuries...

Once Kessel leaves in 14/15 to the Wild I will not be a leaf fan anymore for the following reasons...

Burke will have given 2 high first rounders and a 2nd to Boston with absolutly nothing to show for it, Burke will be fired. A new GM will step in and make panic switch signings of old and out of their prime players. Leafs will continue to be the laughing stock of the league for another half dozen years. Then in 2018/2019 with a 15 year playoff drought a fourth lockout will occur under a 66 year old Gary Bettman which will once again plague the league and rob any ramaining hockey fans of another year.

Theres still a chance we can have a good year and come 23rd or 24th with him if this lockout doesn't last 2 seasons

Sounds like a nice experience. Reinforces Kessel is not long on Toronto. No chance he resigns here and that's not a bad thing!

This lockout won't even last 1 season.

BUrke will have him re-signed at the first opportunity.

No way we let one of the elite young players in the game get away from us.

I think it is time Leafs fans start showing a little love towards Kessel.

Otherwise if he does go, then what do we have to show for those 3 infamous picks?

And what has this to do with the initial post I quoted?

And I won't compare them defensively as I would be entirely basing my opinion on info gleaned from different scouting services.

I prefer to see them play and form my own opinion.

And again, all of this discussion flows from a post which simply compared their point totals.

That's a leitmotiv we often see on these Boards: so-and-so has xxx number of points so he's a good D-man.

PS: I haven't seen your answer as to whether you loved the Mike Green from 3, 4 and 5 years ago.

36 goals and 60 points in 70 games, and PPG in the playoffs.

You're damn right he asks for 9.5% of the cap, regardless of age.

Semin over a 5 year stretch got around 30-40 goals per season.
Had consistency problems. Had a questionable attitude. Had glaring defensive deficiencies.

Let's be honest... who does that remind us of?
It's pretty much a carbon copy comparison to Kessel.

And Semin can't seem to get anything more than one year extensions.

I want Kessel to stay, but with similar type contracts.
If he wants like an 8 year contract at like 8 mil per, let him walk.
