Sportsnet to broadcast AHL games

Sportsnet ONE hits the ice on Oct. 13 at 5 p.m. ET / 2 p.m. PT as the defending Western Conference champion Toronto Marlies (Maple Leafs’ AHL affiliate) open their season at home against the Rochester Americans (Sabres’ AHL affiliate).

HOCKEY CENTRAL host Jeff Marek will be joined by analysts Brad May and John Shannon to break it all down during pre-game and intermission analysis. Joe Bowen and Greg Millen return to their familiar places in the broadcast booth to provide play-by-play and analysis, respectively, alongside host Paul Hendrick.

Awesome! like I said in another thread, the NHL can do whatever they want, not only do I have other hockey options I have other sports options. The worst thing that could happen for the league is the the fan base feeling apathetic to everything and that is what is happening. Can't wait to catch some Marlies games this year!

I will tune in only to listen to Joe Bowen. I can't really get in to minor league hockey if they only going to show select games. If they show every Marlies game till the lockout is done then I will happily tune in.

we've heard things like this before and it doesn't happen (only shown in the Ontario region). I hope it is true because Leaf/Marlies fans live all across the universe and it would be good to get to see games out here.

At least we can still hear Joe Bowen doing games while the lockout is happening. I also wonder if he will also do them for the Marlies games that are going to be on Leafs TV?

Are the Marlies going to have a 2012 Western Conference Champions banner raising before their season opener or does the AHL not do things like that for teams who lost the previous Calder Cup Finals?

I'm actually looking forward to this. I'm hoping to swing by Ricoh and catch a few games too. Will definitely take in a game at Copps, as I'm in Hamilton.

Has anyone heard of games on LeafsTV? I've only heard of Sportsnet games, on the Fan radio (obv.). Nothing else yet.

I hope they do, just to annoy your condescending ass.

Wonder why they wouldnt move from 5pm to 7pm and try to grab the "traditional" Saturday night hockey audience?

Not sure of AHL blackout rules, if there is any.

If you read the whole article, it goes on to describe a double-header the following week with Toronto-Hamilton in the first game and Chicago-Abbotsford in the second. So, my guess is that Sportsnet has bought national rights.

Edit: And in fact, this article on the AHL web site describes the games as national: http://theahl.com/sportsnet-to-air-ahl-games-p179497.

Well this is good news and I will definitely tune in. That being said for me there just isn't really any excitement to these games. I am a hockey fan so sure it will be entertaining.. but when the Marlies blast one home I doubt I'll cheer, I'll be a little happy but I won't be jumping up and screaming YEAHHHH. I do that for almost every Leaf goal (when they aren't down by like 4) and this is even when I am alone watching.

For whatever reason if it's not he Leafs or I don't have money on it it just isn't that exciting. I will get more excited watching my 8 year old niece tear up the houseleague! Actually I'll cheer pretty loud there!

I want this

I almost hit the roof with this one!

The 2nd game of the season on the 14th will be on Leafs TV. I would imagine the home games will all be televised on either Sportsnet or Leafs TV (until the lockout ends anyway). Hopefully the road games that take place in Canada will be broadcast as well.

Thanks. I will watch what I can. Might actually help the Marlies for a few years, as well as having a great prospect rich team.

Won't be home for the opener so I'll probably have to catch highlights but it'll be nice if they air AHL games more regularly while the lockout is happening.

Isn't this the game where they lose in OT because Gus tried to stop a puck that was going wide of the net and he ended up redirecting into the net through his goalie pads?
