Top 20 Defensemen Defensively #9 Tiebreaker

One day poll. Whoever loses will be re-entered into the poll for the next round.

Funny how neither option gets top pairing minutes in their respective teams.

Mitchell.

As many things as Siedenberg has going for him - he's a rock, and rose his game to stratospheric heights in the 2011 playoffs - but he's just not the best defensive defenseman on his team and, aside from 60-odd games in Florida, never has been. That lack of night-in, night-out responsibility is enough to keep him out of the top ten for me.

Mitchell, has the frame and is one of the smartest defensive d-men in the nhl. And he was a big reason Kovalchuk had only 1 goal in the stanley cup finals.

I say Mitchell, but Seidenber's right there with him. These guys should be much closer to 3 and 4 than 9 and 10, though.

edit: McDonagh and Georges are above them? In a "who is the best defensive and just defensive player poll?" Must be representative voting. That conclusion is nuts.

Neither guy should be this high, but I'll take Mitchell.

I think Kovalchuk's injury was a bigger reason.

No offense, but this has been the worst and most innaccurate poll I have ever seen on HF. Playing top minutes =/= being the top defensively in the NHL. Disgrace to anyone who claims to know anything aobut hockey IMHO

So player A plays against 1st line forwards for 26 minutes and player B plays against 2nd and 3rd line forwards for 18 minutes, and youre telling me that makes no difference at all?

Life is too short for hypotheticals I am afraid. In the real world, coaches most often play their best offensive defensemen.

take the case of the LA Kings. Doughty is solid defensively and plays top minutes for the Kings, but Scuderi and Mitchell are probably superior defensively

Yeah coaches most often play their best offensive defensemen. And defense works in pairs. For every offensive defenseman getting over 20 minutes, there's a defensive partner getting over 20 minutes.

Sticking with the Kings example, it's one thing if you think Mitchell is better than Scuderi, but if you don't think it factors in that Scuderi has a bigger job playing on the first pair with Doughty, then that's just bizarre.

TOI has just as much to do with defense as it does offense.

Because putting Seidenberg and Chara on the same line would be a waste.

Both are terrific defensively and eat up loads of minutes... We only need them when we face tough teams in the playoffs and need to shut down lines. Seidenberg also gets almost as many minutes as Chara, too, so I don't know what you're on about. He even gets more sometimes.
