This is the year to tank

Or would you feel better if the title of the thread was, 'This is the year to select 1st overall.'

I've never been less interested in the Leafs. Let our system fill all the holes, play our talented younger players. Keep our 2 goalies, make no more moves.

Screw it. I could do a season at the bottom standing on my head at this point.

Hope we fall flat when hockey gets back around December personally.

Never has a team needed a true franchise player so badly.

And the Toronto Maple Leafs select 1st overall..

GOD that sounds good. Once, just once in my life!!

Well, if we keep going at this pace, we'll end up finishing with 0 points.

This roster doesn't even have to lose on purpose. They can all, almost to the man over achieve and still be a lottery pick team. We have some decent individual pieces - but as a whole - this group is not competitive no matter how you look at it.

A Brian Gionta knee would almost assure us a lottery pick. Same cast of characters, same old results.

Kadri better be good this year if we are to be better.

We should have a post season tourney called "the tank bowl". Teams play each other for the first pick overall. Those teams that strive for playoffs, but fall short then have the best shot at the number 1 pick.

Otherwise why don't we have a league of half losers. Like the super tanks. The teams with no shot at all just trade away their average to above average vets in return for prospects and the hopes of being the lousiest team around. Oh draft day bliss!!!!!

You can't tank when there are no games to be played - I believe the season is lost. If that's the case and they decide to use the same system as last time, we actually have a pretty decent chance at 1st overall selection.

If the leafs get an oportunity to select in the top 5 in this up and coming draft, our forutnes will change. Doesnt even necessarily have to be 1st overal.

Mackinnon
Pulock
Jones
Monahan
Shinkaruk
Barkov

any of those players would be amazing. I'd trade Rielly to get my hands on a top 5 selection in this up coming draft.

Tank Nation I loath you with every ounce of my being. I am so tired of people using the "Major League" Hollywood fantasy of trying to lose as a virtue, or (sadly) as a grounded reality.

Game Plan:

"Ok guys, let's try to lose this one tonight. What? You actually want to play well because you want a new contract next season? You have a family and a house? But, what about all this couch potato NHL 13 GM's? What the heck are they going to do!!???"

GTFO!

Obviously i dont want the team to purposefully tank. If we are bad, we will select in the lottery, if our fortunes are getting better then maybe tanking isnt the solution.

I'm for tanking if we have 15 games left and we're in the bottom 5 of the league, but talking about tanking before we see anyone on the ice?

I don't why you would want to see them lose, before you even see them play. Just ridiculous.

You would trade Reilly for a top 5. OK. Reilly and our first? That doesn't make sense. Reilly straight up for the top 5? Wait that doesn't make sense.

Conclusion: you don't make any sense.

I conclude he isn't that high on Rielly, or is much higher on these other guys.

I'd certainly do Rielly for someone like Duchene, or in a package for Malkin/Kopitar.

Of course you would. You have a HF avatar. You're obviously one of those turkeys who would rather have a ton of prospects than a good NHL team every year. You're one of those guys who would rather have THOSE GUYS prospects than OUR GUYS prospects.

Simply put, you think you're a scout and fall in love with guys you see at most a handful of times.

We actually have a large number of guys who are UFAs next year that could be trade deadline bait.

Bozak, MacArthur, Connolly, and Lombardi. Lupul as well, though he's probably worth keeping if we can get him signed. The rest can go.

If they dumped those guys for picks/prospects, I wouldn't at all be upset. This is a team that is very far from being a contender, with no pieces in the system likely to address the two main issues (centre/goaltending).

Burke would probably trade the 1st overall pick at the draft for Bobby Ryan.

I do not doubt that Rielly is a great hockey player. However the leafs have more pressing needs then a PMD.

Ask yourself, what are the leafs most pressing needs? Who is our #1 shut down defenseman? Who is our #1G? Who is our #1C. answer is simple; Gunnarsson, Bozak, and Riemer.

You need to fill these holes before you can even contemplate making the playoffs/ winning a stanley cup. In order to get these needs filled, you need to sacrifice players from areas of strengths.

Lets look at our defense right now: Phaneuf (PMD), Gunnarsson (shutdown), Gardiner (PMD), Liles (PMD), Komisarek (useless as **** on a bull shut down D), Franson (PMD), Holzer (ill say hybrid), Blacker (PMD), Ranger (Hybrid), Kostka (PMD), Fraser (Shut down) Percy (hybrid but not physical at all), Finn (Hybrid).

If theres a possition of strength its at PUCK MOVING DEFENSEMAN.

Either way thats not what im talking about. There are a handful of pottential number #1 centers in the next years draft. I can tell you that the difference between the leafs making the playoffs/become an anual contender is not another PMD/Hybrid. Its either a #1G or a #1C. Those were our most pressing needs BEFORE we drafted Rielly, and ARE STILL our most pressig needs. They need to be adressed, and obviously this probably wont be happening through trade.

As many logical posters on HF know, number 1 centers are developed from within 75%of the time.

Toews - Draft
E.Staal - Draft
Crosby -Draft
Benn - Draft
Kopitar - Draft
Malkin - Draft
Getzlaf - Draft
M.Koivu - Draft
RNH - Draft
Statsny - Draft
Duchene - Draft
Couture- Draft
Datsyuk - Draft
Krejci - Draft
Seguin - Draft
Backstrom -Draft
Kuznetsov - Draft
Weiss - Draft
Giroux Draft
Elias - Draft
Stamkos - Draft
Lecavallier - Draft
Tavares - Draft
Sedin - Draft
Oshie- Draft

Leaf fans need to pull their heads out of their ***** and realise that NOT everything in toronto is the best option. We clearly havnt made the playoffs in 7 years. In order to have some success we are going to have to make some sacrifices.

Que the IM RUSSEL OLIVER!! Bozak + Franson and a 2nd for your used GOLD!!!

How sweet would this sound!

With the first pick in the 2013 NHL draft, the Toronto Maple Leafs are proud to select from the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior League, Nathan MacKinnon.
