Other than Hockey:

LA Lakers: Kept the name from Minnesota Lakers. There are a lot of lakes in Minnesota, while LA is not known for it's lakes.

Utah Jazz: Came from New Orleans and kept name. Utah is not a place known for Jazz... while New Orleans is Jazz central.

Honourable mentions: The Whalers (harsh implications!) and the Blackhawks (racist) and the NFL's Redskins (racist)
Jets? where did that come from?

I disagree. Every time I think of River Rats I think of a mutant rodent swimming in sewage. It's no wonder they're New Jersey's farm team.

The Calgary Radz (Dude, surfs up, but in Calgary?)

Las Vegas Ice Frogs (Only slightly more cute the Ducks, but less intimidating then a pee wee team)

The worst IMO is the New York Golden Blades (The team logo was atrocious. It looks like a figure skating club. "Here comes Smith down the ice....and look...a triple axel."

First of all, any team with a nickname preface of "ice" is lame.

Worcester IceCats
Austin Ice Bats
Nuernberg Ice Tigers
Long Beach Ice Dogs
Louisiana IceGators
Pensacola Ice Pilots
Rockford IceHogs
Throw in Springfleid Iceatops.

Odessa Jackalopes is pretty bad and the Crunch team in AHL is bad too.

But the winners is The Anaheim Mighty Ducks. Quack!

No. I have heard of the Avro Arrow though...I assume that that this is the jet you are referring to as it was the image on one of the masks worn by a Winnipeg goaltender that is now displayed in the hockey hall of fame.

It is interesting that Winnipeg would name its team after a jet that was made in Toronto. I wonder what if there is some connection between Winnipeg and the Arrow that I am unaware of...

I'm not entirely positive about this, but I'm pretty sure the Avro Arrow was made and developed in or around Winnipeg. There is a military bas right outside of Winni. I'll check into it for you.

The Winnipeg Jets nickname has nothing to do with the Arrow.

They earned their nickname because their franchise player was Bobby "The Golden Jet" Hull.

You got that in writing somewhere? It's my understanding the team existed before he joined them, but I always like to know the truth, even if I'm wrong.

Don't have to. It was built at Pearson Airport (I think that is still the name) in Toronto. Everything that had anything to do with the Arrow happened in Ontario. I did a paper on the Arrow in grade 10 and I own several books that will testify to this, if you want some titles I will dig them up for you.

I was curious about this myself, so I looked it up. From a website called 'sportsecyclopedia' (??):

Nickname:
Named after Winnipeg's Western Hockey League team and growing transport industry. A frequent misconception is that the team was named after the first player in franchise history, Bobby Hull nicknamed "The Golden Jet" who they signed away from the Chicago Blackhawks for a record breaking $1 million dollars.

The Winnipeg Arena in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, located in a city of over 700,000 people, in a market area of more than 1.5 million, conveniently located only 10 minutes from the Winnipeg Airport and downtown area. With a seating capacity of 3,000 to 17,500, the largest facility within a 500 mile radius, it's an attractive market for any event.

Winnipeg Arena was built in the 1950s for the WHL's Winnipeg Warriors (which folded along with the rest of the league). In 1971 The Winnipeg Jets were founded, and in 1972 the became a part of the WHA.

They signed Bobby Hull away from the NHL and fans immediately dubbed him the "Golden Jet" for his million dollar contract .. After the Winnipeg Jets left for Phoenix, the IHL's Manitoba Moose took over.

Actually, the main reason they made the push for the Jet was because it would be an easy marketing tool.

How about Lizard Kings? Hockey seems to have this thing for teams with "King" in the name. Also the logo is god awful.

I believe the Victoria team name is a play on the term "King Salmon" which is an American expression for what we refer to as Spring or Chinook Salmon.

My favourite has to be the Jacksonville Lizard Kings of the ECHL and their second logo. As far as bad the Lubbock Cotton Kings logo makes the Salmon Kings look brilliant by comparison and the Renfrew Creamery Kings?????

I know the OHL had the Kingston Canadiens, Frontenacs and Raiders - what about the Kingston Kings??????

Some other hockey King names and some logos.

Alaska Gold Kings http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/logos/l...l/alagol96.gif

Brandon Wheat Kings http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/logos/l...kings_1972.gif

Cobalt Silver Kings 1908-1909 of the TPHL. Art Ross was one of the stars loaned to them for the playoffs.

Colorado Gold Kings http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/logos/l...kings_1999.gif

Edmonton Oil Kings http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/logos/l...kings_1972.gif

Elmira Sugar Kings http://www.legendsofhockey.net:8080/...ra+Sugar+Kings

Haileybury Silver Kings of the old NHA. Art Ross also played for this team in 1909-1910 as well as Newsy Lalonde. http://www.legendsofhockey.net:8080/...%20Kings#photo

Memphis Riverkings http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/logos/l...kings_1994.gif

Pembroke Lumber Kings http://www.angelfire.com/sports/pucks/plumberkings.html
They were also a pro team back in the early 1900's with HHOF's Art Ross and Hughie Lehman on the team.

Powell River Kings http://www.powellriverkings.com/

Prince George Spruce Kings http://www.sprucekings.bc.ca/

Renfrew Creamery Kings 1909-1910 of the old NHA who had Cyclone Taylor as their star along with Newsy Lalonde. http://www.hockeysandwich.com/fredtaylor.html

I thought the nickname the Golden Jet originated based on his blond hair and speed down the wing.Seems to me he was referred to as The Golden Jet while a Blackhawk, and i dont remember him ever resigning with them once he bolted for the WHA.
Of course i could be wrong,my mind is old and weak and its getting worse by the day.But its not totally gone,i can still remember the days when in February the NHL regular season was gearing up for the post all-star game playoff drive.
Those were the days.

Bobby Hull was known as the Golden Jet during his Chicago days, long before he joined the Jets.

I don't know where Messenger got that from but its incorrect.

The single worst name in the history of sports is one that just comes into effect this year... After submitting the change to Major League Baseball the Anaheim Angels are now known as:

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim

HUH???????????????????????????????

Is it Los Angeles or is it Anaheim? It's like calling the Toronto Maple Leafs the Ottawa Maple Leafs of Toronto... What a stupid idea.... I cannot believe that someone in that organization didn't at some point step up and say, "hey guys, maybe we should give some thought to this... this name really sucks!"

Btw, the St. John's Fog Devils ranks right up there with the worst too
