3rd rounders are the extreme edge of "might be worth something" picks. Glancing through this a player picked 61-90 (the current 3rd round range) has just about a 23% chance of playing 100 NHL games. We picked up 246 games worth of Darroll Powe for the cost of 23% of 100+ games. Maybe he's a 4th liner, but he's an actual NHL player.
yep...people tend to forget the avg. games played drop off when throwing picks around. Everyone loves picks because they could turn out to be a diamond in the rough vs that boring lunchpail 4th liner.
Meh, Powe is perfect for the job. Mitchell - Konopka - Powe 4th line is one of the best energy/checking lines out there, no doubt about that. It also benefits from the fact that every one of those guys is able to play C, in fact the only reason I put Konopka in there is his FO ability.
Gotta love the fact that we have Veilleux, McIntyre, Rau, McMillan, Kassian, Dowell, Bulmer and Palmieri available in case we need to replace a guy on bottom 6. No more Warren ****ing Peters. Ever. And on top 6, we have Zucker, Fontaine, Foucault and potentially Coyle and Phillips as call-ups in addition to some experienced players like Brodziak who wouldn't (and didn't) look out of place in our top 6.
I'd still take Brodziak before Cullen in our second line. But yeah, this is a bit off topic.
While we could use another couple defensemen in the prospect pool, it's more an issue of timing and roles than anything else. Scandella and Brodin will be with the big club whenever the NHL starts up again. Kampfer's not exactly a defensive stalwart. Cuma's still too much of a question mark. Genoway and Connelly are AHL offensive guys. Bagnall's obviously a career AHLer. But when you look at our system, we have Dumba, Seeler, and Draeger outside of Houston (and some will add Gunnarsson or Jobke to that list). If our Houston group were a bit more balanced instead of being all offensive or NHL guys I think we'd be fine.
Defensemen take a while to develop. I have questions on Seeler and Draeger and their contributions. It's too hard to project where they can be in 4-5 years.
I can't agree. Zucker is definitely the first call up for a winger in my mind. He's already proven he can handle the defensive side at the NHL level. He seems to have hit his stride and is dominating at the AHL level, he needs opportunity at the NHL level again to see where he needs to work to make his game translate best.
Well duh, the Aeros are a trap team that doesn't score any goals. We all know that. How could they have one of the best goals? It's not like they have two guys tied for the rookie goal scoring lead or something like that.
Should we be worried about our goalies or not? Both are under 0.900 at the moment..

Looking at the AHL's "best goalies" (GAA) you have the McBackup leading the league. Second best is a guy on an AHL only contract. Third's a guy with only 4 games. Next is Lehner, then some UFA signing from Sweden, guy with only 4 games, Dan Ellis, Jeff Frazee, Tokarski, and Zatkoff. So out of the top 10, there's only 3 guys who have both played at least 5 games and are actually prospects (that's if you count Zatkoff as a prospect).
Kuemper is sitting at 19th in GAA right now, and Hackett's having a poor start. But if you watch what kind of goals are being scored on each of them, while there's a number they should have stopped, the majority are from situations you can't blame the goalie. In Kuemper's last game, he had one deflect off two players, while he was screened, and bounce off his goalie mask into the net. Cross crease passes to the back door have been a pretty common occurrence so far this season.
If the defense starts to shape up and the goalies don't start to see an improvement in their numbers, then you can start panicking, but right now it's just too early to draw any conclusions.
Ginand isn't a terrible callup. Maybe a bit surprising, as he's not my second choice for callup (behind Petersen) but he has been playing well recently, which is the most important thing IMO.

While Broda's listed on Elite Prospects as a center, I think he's been playing left wing in Houston so I don't think they'll be asking Ginand to take faceoffs.

Well, the last game made me pissed off at a slew of players, and while Ginand escapes my wrath, he doesn't standout either.
I've thought Rob Mignardi has been a very good player recently, scoring 3 goals over the last 2 games.
