If the season is wiped out - Lupul, Bozak, Conolly etc are UFA's

Will be very interesting to see what Burke does with all the additional cap space - assuming it's close to where it was last season

UFA's:

Lupul - 4.25
Bozak - 1.5
Connolly - 4.75
Lombardi - 3.5
MacArthur - 3.25
Steckel - 1.1

$18 million + off the books for these players

Who other than Lupul do you want back?

Will also be interesting to see what Perry and Getzlaf do in terms of re-signing with the Ducks or going to Free Agency like Suter and Parise did

Lupul would have to be a short term deal, unless Burke really believes that Lupul's previous season can be replicated for more seasons and wasn't a fluke.

Connolly, Lombardi, Steckel -> good riddance
Lupul, Bozak, MacArthur -> definitely want them re-signed

Won't the new CBA determine if their contracts are wiped out or not?

I was basing this thread off a Hockey News article about how a lost season can make a few teams happy that they can get rid of another year of high salaries off their books. One of the examples they gave was Lecavalier who makes several years at $10 million and then it drops down to $1-2 million a season

The last lockout was similar but you're right - the new CBA could involve teams having to pay this years contracts for next season

I would assume current teams would be able to get first crack at their free agents. Wouldn't seem fair to just automatically put all free agents on the market because a season was lost. Would definitely make for an interesting July 1st though.

Spend all of it getting Perry and Getzlaf signed.

Hopefully Bozak gets resigned to a 2-year contract to be our 3rd line center. As for the others, that is a tough call.

Connolly, MacArthur and Lombardi could have easily been shipped before the trade deadline for draft picks or prospects but thanks to those trolls Bettman and Fehr, we could lose them for diddly squat. Any one of those guys could be replaced by Marlies call-ups so their loss would not affect the roster too greatly.

If I were to choose one for those three, MacArthur would be my guy to stick around only if he's willing to take a discount on a short-term contract. As for Lombo and Connolly, no thank you, let them walk

It would be interesting then to see the top guys from each Team who would fall into this category. It could be that it's better off not to bring any back.

They can all walk with the exception of maybe steckel then sign Perry and Getzlaf...

Leafs would end up having a good chunk of that superstar world junior team that won gold for the first time in 7 years. Perry, Getzlaf, Phaneuf, MaCarthur.

Is that what happened last time? I don't recall.

Time to clean up and let majority go (except maybe Lupul, depending on his asking price) to see what we have in Kadri, Colborne, Deschamps, etc.

Whether or not a lost year counts against contracts and how long teams will have to sign their own free agents will be part of a negotiated settlement. And of course, this is only relevant if the whole season is lost.

Season better not be wiped out. What do you think we'd get in deadline deals for:

Connolly, Lombardi, Steckel, and MacArthur? We could probably add 4-5 picks in the upcoming draft by selling off those guys.

We'd still get the cap space, but we'd also get something valuable in return for them.

I would bring Bozak back... easily actually, especially for the around the same cap hit.

Him and Lupul are the only 2 I would bring back of that group.

I think we can replace MacArthur and Steckel from within.

Keep Lupul and let the rest walk. Use the extra cash to make a few big signings / trades.

I was thinking the same thing. If he's demanding too much, I'd be fine to let him walk. For all we know, this past season could have been a fluke year and he hits the jackpot for playing well for 60+ games

Those would be late picks though... Steckel cost Leafs what, a 4th rounder? not gonna get any more than that.. maybe MacArthur would net them a 2nd.. and that's a big maybe.

Bozak would be asking for at least 3 million after putting up decent numbers last season. Plus, if the Leafs don't pick up a number once centre, he'll be able to negotiate knowing he has that spot almost locked up.

I think the reason why Bozak was only given 1.5 million was because Burke signed Connolly to be the #1C. Now that Connolly has shown he's not capable of this role, Bozak is in line for a big raise.

I don't, nor do I think he deserves it. Based off last season, I would give him a two-year, 10 million dollar contract. If he can prove by then that he's developed into an elite winger, then back the truck up to his front door.
