Volchenkov Out Four to Six Weeks

Per TG...Tom Gulitti ‏@TGfireandice
Volchenkov fractured his ankle while playing for Torpedo in KHL and will miss four to six weeks.

Well if the season does start, I guess we may get to see some of our D prospects? Oh wait, Gelinas is injured too....

Let me guess, shot blocking?

If the season were to start soon we'd still have 7 defensemen and wouldn't have to tap into the prospect pool

It was a non hockey injury. I believe it was a Gagnam Style dancing related injury.

But seriously one of the things I was looking forward to at training camp was tradining one of our D, will this have an impact on that?

Veterans
Salvador
Greene
Volchenkov
Zidlicky
Fayne
Larsson
Harrold

I'd be annoyed we lost a guy over seas but we might still be locked out in a month so

A trade is still feasible with Volch out - I don't particularly see Lou pulling the trigger without seeing how the injury heals, but it won't close the doors on any trades.
At worst we have a revolving door on the 3rd pairing to bring up some of the younger guys who need to see some NHL time.

I was alluding to the fact that even if there was hockey this year, our medical staff would somehow prevent Volch from playing

Great. Not that I'm happy about injuries to anyone, but let's hope it don't happen to Kovy or Zidlicky.

I myself was worried he would be demoted to the AHL if he was bad. Kinda like the way he sat for seemingly forever at the end of the last season, and most of the playoffs. I also had a theory that's why they signed Sal knowing full well they had too many D men.

Looking now Larsson is far too good for the AHL. I never would have been in favor of demoting him, but I can see why people thought he could be if worse came to worst.

Larsson was benched because Harrold was playing extremely well. Harrold earned his spot.

Harrold is a call up. A fill in. I don't think he's ever been a full-time defenseman on a playoff team. Just like Gionta isn't REALLY a fourth liner unless he performs the same way this season (if there is one). Lou even said Larsson's roster spot is assured.

I agree if Harrold had not played so well Larsson would have been in a lot sooner.

However I had some doubt he would definitely have an NHL spot. He has no need to play in the AHL, and nothing to prove. I just wouldn't have been shocked had he seen AHL time(Had there been no lockout)

Not that I thought for sure he would be in the AHL. Just said it wouldn't have shocked me. Would have been stupid, I wouldn't have been for it, but stranger things have happened.

Lou has all but assured/hinted that Larsson would be one of the regular top D starters for next season.

Said so in an interview a while ago.

He won't be in the AHL anytime soon.

Especially considering that Larsson's biggest problem was handling an 82 game season in the NHL... there's no chance that they hit rewind once the season begins.
He'll see big minutes. He needs them.
