why would anyone want an inconsistent #4/5 starter for almost 10 million?

Depth? I don't know. He's not really a player you can trade.

At least not after the season starts for any value.

answer to the first question: Yes there's hope!

answer to the second question: Maybe not even them...perhaps their great grandchildren?

I'd like to quote a great Disney character right now: Never tell me the odds.

I'm not expecting the Cubs to ever win a World Series, tbqh. As much as it pains me to say, I think that the funk of ending the drought is too much of a thing in everybody's head, from fans to players, that the moment that a single thing goes wrong, it'll all unravel, a la the debacle in 2003.

Plus, let's face it.... the baseball gods essentially lined up all the stars for the Cubs to win in 2008. Best team in baseball, exactly 100 years, huge media and fan excitement, high expectations, and the Cubs **** themselves in the NLDS.

I hope I'm wrong.... but I have zero hope, sorry to say. Not jumping ship, though. My team's my team, and only way I leave them is if they move to another city or if Bill Wirtz rises from the dead, buys the team, and takes them off TV. The zombie one's more likely, though.

You just need the right manager, with the right attitude and style, and that wouldn't be an issue. I still think Sandberg was that buy, but that's just me...

I like Sveum, no issues with him so far. He reminds me of Bobby Cox. We need to give him some players though, then see what he can do with it.

Saw the worst trade idea ever in an ESPN Insider article today

Ethier, Zach Lee and Billingsley for Elvis Andrus and Neil Ramirez

Awful. Just awful.

Weren't the Brewers interested in him? I could see NL teams trading a decent prospect / good RP / decent platoon bat for him for sure.

Good article on what the Peavy deal implies for the SOX. Most notably, that there will be 2 more years of patchwork and mediocrity, and the rebuild will start in 2015. Guess I can live with that.

Like I said, nothing to lose. It's not our money. If he has a good first half or somehow starts pitching like he used to, holy ****, he could bring back an awesome prospect from a contender. Worth the gamble.

The odds of him pitching well though are really low.

What's well? In his current state, I think he would put up an ERA just under 4 with commensurate numbers in the other catagories on the Cubs. That would get teams interested. If we are going to suck, may as well take these lottery tickets. If nothing else, like I said earlier, it helps us evaluate Sveum if we can give him some decent players.

I'm thinking over 4. Under 4 seems unlikely to me.

If you can get him for a couple of AAA players or as I heard elsewhere, Carlos Marmol....ya I'd take Haren. Think if they got Haren, Marcum, and Youkilis. You could do that for around $30 mil total and you'd have a decent squad.

Exactly. I don't see a lot of risk in this move. The potential gain is limited, I agree on that, but again, we need to fill the rotation and at least there is a chance this guy puts up a solid season. Moreover, he always gets his innings in, and the Cubs needed guys like that badly last year.

Free agency starts tomorrow right?

Saw the Cubs have asked about Scott Baker whom option the Twins declined.

Also, Hoyer said he's had informal contract talks with Ryan Dempster.

Dempster and Baker would be quite the haul.

Theo & Co. are definitely the right captains to turn the ship around, and seems to me like they plan on using Sveum as the guy to be in charge of the rebuild and then bring in someone else when the team's ready to compete again, and from that perspective alone I am a bit cautiously optimistic that the Cubs are on the right track.... but I'm still thinking, best case scenario, competitive past summer, not necessarily World Series.

Hope they prove my pessimism wrong.
