INDIAN WELLS, Calif. -- The Cubs are interested in adding South Korean left-hander Hyun-jin Ryu to their starting rotation for at least the next few years.
Major League Baseball sources confirmed that the Cubs were among the teams who entered a bid for Ryu before Thursday's 4 p.m. Central deadline. He has been posted by the Hanwha Eagles in the Korean Baseball Organization, and the Eagles now have four business days to determine if they are going to accept the highest of the sealed bids, which they have been forwarded by MLB.
Ryu, 25, is represented by Scott Boras. If the Eagles accept the bid, the team making it will have 30 days to sign him. If a deal cannot be reached, no money would change hands and Ryu would remain property of the Eagles.
According to scouts, Ryu throws in the low-90s and has a plus changeup, a skill set that compares favorably to 27-year-old Wei-Yin Chen, the Taiwanese left-hander who went 12-11 for Baltimore last season. He has averaged 181 innings a season in the KBO, leading the league in strikeouts five times. He was a major contributor to the Korean team that won a gold medal in the 2008 Olympics and finished second in the 2009 World Baseball Classic.
Rangers max offer to Hamilton is 3 years! Why the hell would you slap him in the face like that? Chances are he adjusts his demands later on and would have been willing to settle on 4 or 5 years but now you know he won't sign with the Rangers no matter what. How stupid. Only way this makes any sense is if it was something like 3YRS/80M, then it wouldn't be insulting.
What's the appeal with Justin Upton? He's a younger Soriano and will want to get paid big time.
He has 3 years left on his deal so he won't be getting paid until then. The thing about Upton is if he's 2011 Upton he's incredibly valuable, if he's 2012 Upton he's just pretty good. That said, he's 25 and has a ton of upside. I don't think he's as valuable as Castro but Upton + Bauer (or Skaggs) is definitely worth Castro.
I like Castro's contract a lot. I'd rather not bring in Upton. Plus, the reason they want to trade him is because they want to change the culture of their clubhouse. We're trying to get away from guys like that.
