They are meeting again tomorrow so as long as they continue to meet that means progress is still being made. Although no agreement yet they are still willing to talk instead of heaving pot shots at each other so that is positive news.

Bill Daly:"We do not intend to comment on the substance or subject matter of today's negotiations."

John Shannon ‏@JSportsnet
Bill Daly makes statement on the day's session. Confirms 2 sides met for over 5 hours...then won't comment on the content of the meeting.

The 2 sides keeping quiet gives me hope. If I had to bet money though I still think these Bozos will do something to screw it all up.

For all intent and purposes they are negotiating off of the discussions S Fehr and Daly had on the weekend. NHLPA wanted it in writing and the NHL provided that. Now it's the "fine tuning" the "nitty gritty", whatever you like to call it.

Thought they might be able to get it done by the end of the week, lawyers write it up next week and both parties take it to their membership for a vote... could still happen if they negotiate through the weekend.

That they are still talking is a good sign...they are negotiating rather than throwing darts at each other. Its a fine line. One side says "well we think this is a little to high, can you go to this?" other side says "well if we do that then you have to give a little on that"

They may have only talked for 5 1/2 hours this time, at least to each other, but both sides went their own way to discuss what has been brought up to see if they "can give x to take y."

If there are no further cancellation of games today by the league, and they plan on meeting tomorrow and over the weekend, they are that close.

I find the most optimistic sign something may be close to being getting done isn`t just the reports that neither side stormed out of a meeting after 5 mins, moreso, we haven`t heard yet another uninformed player making more assinine statements

One source says - way too early to think\say a deal is close to being done, however, others hint if today goes well agreement won't be far.

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie
Try to refrain from hyperbole but sense today is BIG on NHL labor front. Suspect we find out if this is going north or south. #forkintheroad

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie
BTW, just to clarify, I don't think a deal is imminent. But either getting on track towards one or getting derailed, that's imminent, IMO.

Seems like it to me. Nothing but good coming from these talks, which is the way this should have gone from the very beginning. No BS proposals weeks apart from either side. Actual discussions and an effort to hash this **** out.

Who knows how close we're getting? May be months away yet. Maybe imminent by the end of the weekend. But the fact that these negotiations have been taking THIS form is a fantastic sign. Definitely would be classified as "progress."

The way they've been going, it's written proposals from either side that have been leaked to the press in order to get personal opinion to sway in respective directions.

This is far better. This is ACTUAL progress.

And it's 3:30 so either the talks are still going on, nothing is happening or both.

@Russostrib. Too soon to say, but, some suggest today isn't going great either. We should know soon.

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie
Doesn't sound like things going well with NHL-NHLPA but doing play by play/making sense of offers we know so little about = mug's game.

#CBA Source confirms @reporterchris' report that NHLPA submitted two offers, one on revenue-sharing, another on "Make Whole" provision

Pierre LeBrun ‏@Real_ESPNLeBrun
NHLPA's offered concept to NHL on Make Whole would see players go down to 50-50 of HRR by Year 3. So there's a phase-in element to it

Would not surprise me if one of the sides (actually put me down for both) is trying to squeeze the deal one last time before (at the latest) they settle next Thursday. Ultimately, Fehr and Bettman work for the players and owners and I believe both sides want this done and it will get done. It would be nice for today, but still think a long Holiday weekend and they both show up next Tuesday ready to bang this out with two weeks to get ready for a December first week of hockey.

This allows for 60ish game season and a four day period to realize what this likely will look like; four days is huge in something like this and after the last 3 days they clearly know where each other is in the 'what we want' stage

Let's imagine they get a deal done by this weekend and we play hockey on Dec. 1st.

What will happen to training camps and/or pre-season games?
