He probably thinks he can better use his time elsewhere than Wheeling. Heck I'm pretty sure a lot of people can spend better quality time elsewhere than Wheeling.
I might be a purist but he has a contract. What good is a contract if it means that you just **** off when you feel like it?
If you take a chance to work somewhere else, away from home, but it's not going very well and you feel you deserve (doesn't mean he does) better, you should be allowed the options to go somewhere else/ go back home. He doesn't show, he doesn't get paid. As simple as that.
The team isn't very good and it doesn't help we just have ****** veterans that steal his spot and other players' spot.

The Habs probably wouldn't have any issue if he decided to not respect his contract, to be honest. They could then suspend him. Berger is just not an AHL player, nor does he look like one about to turn into one. A waste of one of the 50 contract spots.
I believe you can mutually agree to end a contract if both sides want it, that would be the best outcome here.

Agreed. Next year especially with all the players fighting for a spot. Why have someone take up a spot on our roster who can't hack it/doesn't want to be here when we have more talented players coming in who can fill that spot?
I can't blame Berger, he's done the yo-yo act and is fed up of it, and if I were him I'd go back home too. Nothing is to say he won't be more productive back in Swiss and come back a year later having improved.
I still have hope for the kid. Many others in the past have had **** fits and "I'm not gonna" and they turned out fine in the future....maybe not with the Habs but elsewhere.

You think he signed that in blood with Lucifer as sole witness. O.o
People have a strong tendency to associate contracts with slavery or guaranteed gratification around here.

You can end a contract unilaterally regardless... You just have to accept the consequence. For instance breaking a lease on an apartment, etc..
Can't really blame Berger, he tried the North American thing, he wasn't good enough, why not get on with your life? It's the same reason they'd rather let Avtsin rot on the bench than send him down to the ECHL, they know he's gone when that happens.
He is under contract yes, but the only people he is scrweing over are the Wheeling Nailers.

Glad to see that the only contracts that matter to you are those that you sign with the devil...
It's a legal document. A commitment. Excuse me for thinking people should honour their commitment and stand by their word.
Now if it's a agrrement by both parties, fine. If not, he's at least gonna be prevented from playing in international competitions. I don't know if he's ever going to be good enough to play for switzerland but I would think it would be kind of a big deal for him.
Would Berger count against the 50 contract limit (assuming there is one in the next CBA, assuming there is a next CBA) if the Habs loaned him to a European team for the remainder of his contract?
Trust me, the echl isn't a league you would want to play in, when u could easily be making 4x the amount in the swiss league. Since he is assigned to the coast, his salary becomes 30k give or take if i am correct. BUT!! that is 30k if he plays hockey all year around. Really hes making 30k/52 week = 576$ a week, + the tax deductions here. All in all it is not a very appealing salary for anyone, let alone someone who could be making a ton more back at home.

I think their salary is divided by like 25 weeks not 52, they only get paid during the season.
