considering the alternatives of going to canada or like kansas city, of course nobody is unhappy.
but had one of the many wang-led projects come to fruition (im assuming we can all agree that at least 1 should have), who would take brooklyn over long island? my guess is not too many people.
so yeah, happy they're staying close, but devastated that they're leaving long island. im with whoever said that the team belongs in nassau or suffolk and that its identity is LI. i know what a map looks like, but brooklyn isnt long island, the same way queens isnt long island either. nobody from brooklyn says that theyre from western long island.
and from a non-hockey POV, for those of you who own or even rent property in nassau county, how do you think the $240 million in annual revenue that wang is taking with him to brooklyn is going to be made up?
in addition to saving for LIRR tickets, you better start putting money aside for your tax bills, maintenance fees, and rent.
in closing, i would just like to say that kate murray should die of gonorrhea and rot in hell. who wants a cookie?
I would say Mangano, Gulotta and everyone in Nassau government the past ten years is to blame.
They never consulted Murray on size and scope of project to see what would pass, did they? They asked for the biggest project to win and the LHP was MAMMOTH. No one said who would pay for the cost to expand schools, the difference in what Wang/Reckler would pay for roads and the rest of the question marks.....Murray's job was to protect the taxpayers. She went with a counteroffer and expected Wang to come back with his counteroffer but instead got the "YES OR NO" spiel and killed the LHP that he refused to shrink.
The Nassau GOP and Democrats alike deserve the blame. They had until yesterday the chance to spend $200M on the arena and protect the $240M annually but chose not to.
Epic fail is an understatement. Nassau is on the way to ruin now. Just watch the businesses leave.
And yes, I defended Murray, the only one who did his or her job right.
He had to make his mark for LI fans.....he had to make his mark after the disappointing coaching carousel with 15 year boy.....he's gonna want to make his mark, "to show he's committwed to Bwooklyn" by singing someone on the outs with their current team.
I can see it happening.
The sad part is, I could see this happening as well.
You would think that at this point, even if he wanted to make a big splash to get some headlines, he'd trust Snow enough to let him make the move himself.
Hopefully we have seen the last of DP contracts and trading future All-Stars for cap cancers.

i more or less agree, and to the best of my knowledge, murray was never consulted, however, i dont think that she did her due diligence in researching the project out. if she did, i believe she would have given it a green light. and from wang's POV, i cant really blame him for balking at submitting a counter-proposal. it was his vision, not the county's. why should he foot the bill for something he didnt think up?
i also blame the people of nassau county for having tunnel vision and for not understanding what has been going on the past 10-12 years. the long and short is that a lot of people voted 'no' last august because they thought that a new arena would be completely publicly funded...and for those who did have a grasp on things, they were concerned about their taxes going up. fair enough.
the thing is: taxes are def going up anyway except now the county doesnt have a new arena or a professional hockey team to show for it, and 2,600 people will be out of work. so, who lost here? clearly, the county and its residents.
im ashamed to be from long island sometimes, and this is one of them. we're such an area of excess. it's disgusting. we cry bloody murder over an extra $50 a year for something that will make the area a better place to live in, will create jobs, and pump revenue into the local economy, then go out and spend $1,500 on a LV clutch (hey, that would make a clever, albeit wordy, meme).
i feel as though the benny hill theme song should be playing on a loop while anyone has this thread open.
Suffolk didn't fail at all, they were in never in the mix. Do you really think Bellone was concerned bout the isles or fixing Suffolk county?? you wanna blame someone, blame the politicians of Nassau and every owner this franchise had for the past 20+years or so. it's bout damn this franchise has stability and hope. if this doesn't work out, then in 25 years we can all talk bout our next new home in the tri-state are or be rooting for a team in KC or wherever else the owner at the time threatens to move this team. short term this a great great deal but once the winning and novelty wears off, this franchise will be back to where we are right now. history has a funny way of repeating itself.
Hey, read the post again man. I said Nassau obviously failed, & they failed in technicolor over a long period of time so does it even need explaining? Regarding Suffolk, when an NHL team makes itself available, one with an established base with half their fans in your tax base you grab it. Those opportunities don't happen on your time frame, if ever. They didn't even really try. The city didn't waste any time though. The truth speaks for itself.
I would agree with you 100% if Wang wasn't still the owner. It's good the arena is no longer an excuse, but I don't trust him at all to make the right on ice moves now. I mean anyone else feel another Spezza/Chara for Yashin deal coming up right around 2015?

Suffolk was open, and even stated so much in the press if you search. Wang never went to them, so nothing materialized. BK got it, because they already had a venue built. Plain and simple (I'm not complaining).
Don't know how anybody could not be happy. After 13plus years Nassau proved itself to be the abyss. They had to know that the team might move to Brooklyn yet they continued to drag their feet. Heck if they had half a brain they could have given Wang an even better revision of the lease as an incentive to give them more time. Bottom line despite all the wishes and dreams of some fans Nassau was never going to happen so the move was inevitable better sooner than later.
I live on the north shore in glen head, I never take the train out of glen head because they never have late trains home however, hockey games don't end late so I could take the train out of glen head right to brooklyn. About an hour commute, $16 round trip which is about the same price of parking at the coliseum so for a little longer commute at about the same price I can't complain. They are here to stay!
I got nauseated when I read about the stiffs in the Booster Club whining about the move in Newsday this morning.
This isn't about you, it's about the greater good for the team and our fanbase. You might not get to go to 41 games a year, but you can still watch them 41 games a year on local cable. You won't have to find another team, buy the NHL package, or root for an Islanders team in a different jersey... you'll still be watching JT and friends in an Islanders jersey -- and oh yeah, you can come to the game on the LIRR and it will drop you off right at the arena.

These are my thoughts exactly
At the end of the day, all that matters is that our team is still here TECHNICALLY on Long Island, the name, logo and colors are NOT being messed around with, and even though it's less convenient for most of us - getting to a game is still very much possible. What disgusts me even more is people complain about having to take a train yet plenty of LI Ranger fans gladly hop on trains to go see them play at the Garden. If you're a real fan, and you can afford it, I really don't see any reason why you can't spare a little convenience for the sake of your team still being around.

Don't you see the irony?
It's the Long Island mentality, just in a different package.
The same NIMBY mentality that does not want to be inconvenienced with progress like the LH project just manifests itself in the form of "If I can't get there by car in under twenty minutes and if parking costs more than ten dollars and tickets cost more than thirty and the team does not win I am getting screwed.
We can finally end the kansas city, seattle, quebec, etc...BS and finally know that the New York Islanders are NOT going anywhere!!!
I will definitely miss the old Coli, but I live in the city, so will def be more convenient for me and will be nice to see our games in a legit building!!!

who cares about the booster clubs..they are the kids that couldn't sit at the cool table in high school....there job is to annoy everyone else including the players
