What's the deal with girdles and shells?

It seems there aren't any hockey girdles for sale anymore, and that they're falling out of favor. I like the idea, since I play much more roller than ice and I want to be able to use the same stuff for both (obviously switching between roller pants and shells).

Do any of you guys use girdle/shell setups? I've actually got a mission wrap girdle on the way through the mail and I also, am looking around for others experiences with girdles.

I use a warrior projekt girdle with tackla shells and have since high school (used a girdle and shell, I mean).

I have always been a fan of giving up a little padding to gain elsewhere.

Most all AAA and HS players I know and play with around this area still use a girdle and shell for what that is worth.

Maybe girdles are falling out of favor now because hockey pants have gotten so light and comfortable. I just bought some CCM U+ 12 pants and am amazed at how light and comfy, and more protective they are than the old Cooper pants that I've just retired.

I use a Mission roller hockey girdle for ice hockey. In non-checking adult league, it's plenty enough protection for me. There's not a huge selection, but all the big name supplier sites seem to have girdles to choose from.

They are still made, just impossible to find in stores.

All the manufacturers make at least one. Bauer has had two, a Vapor and Supreme, but the Vapor will be disappearing soon and there will be two Supreme models for 2013.

Warrior, Tackla, CCM and Easton all make girdles as well.

Some areas dont carry them or feel they arent as popular, others do. I have girdles on my rack right now from all of the above and we sell them pretty well.

If no one carries them locally for you and are not willing to order them to let you try them, go to a place like Icewarehouse and purchase online as they'll let you return stuff without question if you dont like it.

I'd recommend the Warrior though, its very low profile and has a little less padding than some so might be cooler for roller.
