Time Spent on Hockey

While in the shower (where all great ideas come from) I had an interesting little thought about hockey.

In the regular season (assuming there is one) the team you support plays 82 games. Giving an average of almost 3 hours per game (including pre/post game shows), that's over 240 hours in a season. 240 hours = 10 whole days. So the average hockey fan watches 10 days of hockey in a season, not including other games watched, or the playoffs. (Or countless hours spent on HF)
Pretty cool/disturbing

The average hockey fan doesn't watch 82 games per year, I'll wager.

People on HFBoards aren't exactly "average" in terms of fandom.

PVR'd or downloaded games take 70-80 mins to watch bro. Never wanna watch live TV hockey with commercials again (it's not so bad in an arena itself). That's also why I don't watch hockey live in bars.

Though if you are thinking about hockey in the shower then you are a hardcore fan. I got some of my best trade ideas when I used to play fantasy hockey that way

I don't even wanna think about it. 10+ NHL games a week, 2-3 live games in Sweden... Add in HFboards, hockey talk on twitter and with friends, plus the work I do on Franchise Hockey Manager 13... Ooooouch.

You say this like it's a problem?

I've had FAR worse habits, believe me.....I've told both my ex-wives that.

It's even more pathetic that in the past year, I have spent more than 10 days playing MW3.

So I have a combined 20 days spend either watching hockey or playing MW3.

Change MW3 to FIFA, and add another ten days of watching soccer....

That's 30 days spent on things that many would consider unnecessary.

But now I have 10 days freed up... To watch more soccer

I would venture to guess I watched over 200 before the playoffs. Capitals + a lot of Winnipeg/Florida towards the end because of the playoff race between the 3. Then an assortment of the Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday games... Oh yeah and probably half of Traktor Chelyabinsk's games + WJC + WC. 200 is now sounding on the low side, it could be 300+.

Before idiotic comments, I'm a currency trader, Forex is open Sunday 5 PM till Friday 5 PM.

I should start a thread called: Ask a guy who watched probably 300+ games anything.

I don't think anybody is dumping on football. NFL Network itself runs games in their entirity with the commercials and dead time cut down from three hours to an hour. Not bad once you factor in their own commercials, NFL update clips, etc.

I've watched more than 82 games per year for at least the past 4 years since I've been able to do so, but I do lots of other things during them so it's not like I'm sitting there staring at the screen losing time. That helps!

You're assuming fans watch all 82 games. I think I only watch about 50-60 games a year, on average. Sometimes, not even the whole game.

Yes, I was assuming that people on a hockey forum try to watch every game their team plays

Recorded games are terrible. I don't understand how anyone can get entertainment out of not watching live games, it takes away from the whole experience in my opinion.

Per topic, I'd venture that the average fan watches ~65 games. While the occasional fan watches a little less. Most people don't call themselves a fan of a hockey team unless they follow them at least a little actively.

HF users, I'd hate to guess but if we assume 30 minutes per day minimum (hell, I've probably spent 2 hours a day when work is dull) of actual reading, 82 games at 2.5 hours (3 seems a little more, I usually allot 2.5 hours max) and then a misc category for games and other news sources around a half hour a day... perhaps 24 total days in time spent around hockey with a +/- 2 day window. That's around 7% of your total time per year.
