Rielly vs Grigorenko vs Forsberg vs Faksa

Now that a few months have passed, who would you have taken at 5th overall? At the time, we all wanted a center or at least a high end forward with size and skill, so I limited this poll to the top forwards who were available in the 5 slot.

I would have taken Forsberg at the time but became a bit lukewarm after he dropped out of the top 10.

Never been fortunate to see any of them play live so I defer to the experts. Grigo is off to a fast start again but given the team Rielly's playing on, his 15 points in 12 games is at least equally impressive. Good thing I didn't have a gun on draft day, but Rielly's my man now.

I figured Forsberg would be playing in the SEL this year. Is he too young or something? If not, you'd think if he was such a talented prospect he would be playing in a top European league.

His team is relegated to the lower level...he's still playing in a professional men's league.

Rielly was always my guy, if we were taking a defenceman .

To this day, I still wish we'd have taken Forsberg.

Can't say im all that disappointed with how it worked out though.

Yeppp. I went hard into scouting reports and final rankings like, the last week and a half before the draft, and I really wanted Grigo. I still want Grigs; I think he'll be a consistent 70+ guy in the NHL. But if we drafted a defensemen, Rielly was the only one I'd be okay with. You don't draft defensive defensemen high because they're just so hard to project (Schenn, E. Johnson, Bogo, Barker, Hickey just off the top of my head), and Rielly was clear and away the best OFD of all the top D prospects. Of course I was terrified of drafting a guy 5th overall off 18 games, but a few months later and he's proved that wasn't a hot streak, so I couldn't be happier.

Ill say Rielly, but its impossible to say. Gotta wait 4-5 years to get a good idea.

Who's gonna be better, Duchene or Hedman? Its still too early to tell with those two.

I wanted Rielly if we were taking a defenceman, but I must confess my first choice was Grigorenko.

I wanted Grigs since the start of the season last year. My outlook remains the same the kid is a stud and Buffalo got a nice pickup. That being said I am happy with Rielly.

Pretty much this but I wanted Gally more than Grigs but knew he wouldnt be there for us. I really did not think in a million years Burke would risk taking 'the injured kid' and was expecting Rhart/Lind/Dumba as a d pick, I'll admit when he picked Rielly I was worried, few games into this year, I couldnt be happier with it. That kadri pick though will come to haunt us.

To be honest, at the time of the draft, I thought for sure Forsberg would be Leaf but when the Schenn trade happened, everything kind of made sense and suddenly I wasn't really as much fond of Forsberg since it made me realize that Burke was willing to make a good trade from a position of strenght to the position of need.

I am still kind of torn towards Grigerenko, I know he is tearing up the QMJHL league( which is great) but I still have the concern about his consistency and whether or not he can keep up his production throughout the year and translate it to the NHL level. I think he could be real boom/dissapointing pick when it's all said and done.

IMO, getting JVR makes the need of drafting Forsberg somewhat redundant and Rielly is looking great so far. I have high hopes for Rielly and quite content with him.

I liked the Rielly pick on draft day, and continue to like it. Grigorenko has been having a great start to the season too, but at the moment I wouldn't trade Rielly for him.

He will play in Leksands until he comes to North America ...It's not that he couldn't make the SEL. BTW Allsvenksan is a great place to develop he gets way more playing time than he would get in the SEL.

We picked BPA and it's looking good for us as of now, so I'd go with Rielly again. At the time I really wanted Forsberg or Faksa because I think addressing the need of a real #1 centerman is important and I feel that Faksa would be a good fit in the Carlyle system as a top guy. That being said Burke and co. made an amazing selection grabbing Rielly and I'm very happy with it. I'd love to have Faksa too, but Rielly is the real deal.

To elaborate, Forsberg plays on Leksands (in Allsvenskan) because it's his hometown team. Most players in Europe play for their hometown team or the closest team to where they live and these players have strong allegiance to these teams. Until Leksands advances back the SEL, they'll be playing tier-2 hockey. That being said, many fans feel that Allsvenskan is a high level of hockey and on-par, if not above, the FEL.
