How Bad Will 2013-2014 Be?

Assuming no major changes are made (i.e. Vanek and Miller stay), this is our roster heading into the season:

Vanek-Hodgson-Leino
Ennis-Grigorenko-Stafford
Foligno-Larsson-Ott
Scott-Porter-Kaleta
Tropp/Flynn

Tallinder-Myers
Sulzer-Ehrhoff
Weber-Pysyk
McBain

Miller
Enroth

To me, this is another middling team that's going to stay out of the top-5 while bouncing around 8-12. This is keeping in mind that the Sabres held their own against the NE division pretty well last season and had a decent record after losing Regehr/Leopold/Pominville. Am I too optimistic about Grigorenko/Larsson? What am I missing?

How bad can this season get - predictions?

Bad ... If you expect a lot.

Good ... If you expect to be terrible.

I have this sinking feeling that the team will be unwatchable, yet not bad enough to pick in the top 5....

If Vanek, Stafford and Miller are here and Leino stays healthy the Sabres are 7th-10th team. Wildcard being Hodgson and Grigorenko. If they have a major jump, then its interesting. Tyler Ennis also could make a big jump. Ennis is right around the time we start to find out about a player.

If Vanek, Stafford, and Miller are traded for futures, the Sabres are a bottom 3 NHL team, but we get to see more of our young players.

I wish we were just a bit more developed with our younger guys. I really don't like the right side minus ott. We need a stud wing, like armia. Grrrr patience is a virtue.

I'll give that team 11th, too. A little rebound and development for some guys balanced out by losing Pommer and Sekera, as well as the tougher divisional schedule.

But we really need to lose Vanek and Miler, because 11th place is seriously worst case scenario.

Stafford being traded sends the Sabres towards a playoff spot. Dude is garbage on skates when not a money year.
Vanek and Miller keep this team above bottom of the barrel. But Darcy should take advantage of that and trade them both to be bottom. Two years of suckitude while the kids grow should start now.
That said, similar spot to last year. Some really painful games. Some surprising wins. 12th in conference, 23rd in league.

If Vanek and Miller oare on this team to the deadline and Grigs performes better than last year then this team is on the bubble for playoffs.

alot of players last year had bad seasons so I think many will recover.

If they keep Miller and trade Vanek their goals will drop so they likely will be lower in the standings.

If they keep Vanek and trade Miller then it will be up to the goalies to do decent job to give them a chance.

2 things were the issue last season:

1. they played no West teams. Buffalo has had historically one of the top 3 records against the western teams.

2. They did awful against the SE division teams. Had they been at .500 they likely would have made the playoffs. It was as if they played to the level of their competition.

If they moved Vanek and Miller and returned NHL ready players for them it could be actually good for them and create the competition that will drive players to perform because if they dont some other player will take their job or their ice time.

I highly doubt we will be worse than this year like many are expecting.

Instead of focusing on how bad they'll be, I prefer to focus on how good they won't be

You left out the biggest wildcard of all, what Myers will we get next year? THAT will have an enormous impact on how well/poorly the team does.

A new coach, full training camp, and a likely healthier season will end with a 8-12 finish. If Vanek and Miller get traded then probably 10-14.

Agreed on stafford. He really aggravates me!!

I'm even up for keeping one of vanek/miller.

The kids aren't going to grow if they are just thrown to the wolves.

I'm amazed some posters think its as simple as just letting them play and they will develop. I'm far more concerned with properly developing the prospects we have than I am in completely gutting the roster in the hopes of a top pick.

top 10....draft pick and another up and down season with glimpses of promise but it will be another year without buffalo in the playoffs. if they slide into a top five pick it will have been a disappointing season on the ice but more beneficial for the 3-5 year plan of adding future talent to the team.

I doubt they're going to be any better than last year. Don't really think the difference in the record under Rolston compared to under Ruff is particularly meaningful. Their underlying possession numbers were still awful and they picked up a lot of points in shootouts and overtimes that made them look better than they were. Over a full season, those things are a lot more likely to even out.
