I think not. As for Edmonton needs the NHL. In my opinion, the NHL needs Edmonton more then the other way around.

The prospect of evicting grannies from their homes to subsidize an NHL team with tax monies is not an option that will be long forgot.

Ok, seriously, this is the definition of a straw man argument.

It's actually an appeal to emotion as well which is also a logical fallacy

Bettman mediates and we have a deal. Hate Gary all you like, he helped keep the Oilers in Edmonton twice now.

I've always appreciated Bettman's efforts on behalf of Edmonton. It's a pity he's been vilified so much.

MODERATOR'S NOTE: This hasn't been confirmed by any other source, so take it with a grain of salt.
I've been thinking over the last couple of days that they may tie in this type of news with the home opener and/or 3rd jersey stuff tonight. I guess we'll see if my inkling will be correct.

Rich guys and lawyers aren't liked much in this blue collar town. Goes with the territory I guess.

Either that or being closed minded.

Hahaha oh wow, well if we're playing the hyperbole game, it's likely the "option" will be forgotten because they will soon be six feet under thankfully.

Seriously? Defending a bunch of people who have had so much given to them and to their benefit, and who now later in life find nothing else to do but stop others from a similar type of benefit from the state that they received.

A generation that got such a headstart during the postwar golden age, they have no clue how hard it is out there. If we're evicting grannies it's likely because they ****** up along the way, but I doubt they end up on the street.

There, how was that for hyperbole?

that's it. equate everything to evicting grannies. by that reasoning, we shouldn't do anything other than spend on food, clothing and shelter. everything else is evicting grannies.... on second thought, i am wasting my time discussing this with you. have a nice day.

What a stupid comment. Edmontons no different than virtually any other City when it comes to this.
Whats not liked in this or most Cities ("major league" or otherwise) is corporate welfare.

Just one thing that keeps sticking out in my head is the fact that there is a $100 million gap that everyone says the province will fill. Except the province.

Oilers struggle on ice tonight, but hearing positive vibes for new arena deal.Could happen with Katz and City Council as early as tomorrow.

John Shannon ‏@JSportsnet
Hearing Bettman's stealth visit to Edmonton on Friday helped mend some fences.2nd time he has helped Katz and Mayor Mandel see eye to eye.

Good times by the Oilers completely crapping the bed with the worst period of hockey in the history of the franchise the night before the big city council proceeding.

Just think we could be watching all this crap in a new rink..

All righty then,
Its a big day for arena talks, i think, i haven't kept up with this at all
Didn't expect our players to be down there bargaining though, i was thinking hard practice after a bad loss but whatever
