That's crazy stuff. Sounds like NYC took the full force of the storm along with the Jersey shore.

I've had a few of these too. Just flickers, but it comes back on in a few seconds and it hasn't been a sustained outage.

Seems like the storm headed north and Pitt is going to be dandy. I wonder if we're still projected for a foot of snow.

My buddy lives just on the other side, waist high in his house. It evidently came across the highway in a few places even...

Feel bad for the folks who live down the shore and NYC. Although it isn't much better in South Jersey. Stay safe guys and gals

If you live on a barrier island, WTH would you not evacuate from a hurricane?

Quote:
Jay Zimmerman writes, "We just attempted to rescue 3 people from a house in North Beach and were unsuccessful due the the rapid ocean water. We had to drive away listening to there screams for help. It tore my heart out. The ocean is pouring into the bay from 70th street in Harvey Cedars to atleast surf city. We turned back there. There were cars, entire decks, sheds and contents of houses flowing into the bay. I have never seen anything like it in my life and I'm glad we all got back safely. It was a crazy ride. Pictures to come at daylight."

I really cannot understand what the mayor of Atlantic City was thinking when he told people to stay, and believed that a storm shelter less than a mile from the shore would hold up. Even more foolish are the people who listened to him.

I have a friend in Sea Bright who was pretty proud about staying. Those people stay, thinking they'll be able to ride it out. And then they can't, so they have to call to get taken out and put rescuers lives in danger. It drives me nuts. What do you have to gain from staying?

Hope everyone makes it through as well as possible.

We see the same type of thing here in CA with brush fires. It's extremely unlikely you are going to save your house from a fire with your garden hose, although my great uncle did a few years ago. Their roof caught fire in a couple spots and they put it out. We also have the people that know the state could have a major quake at any time but don't really have enough disaster supplies. I'll admit I'm on of them. It's the idea that nothing bad will happen to you.

I'm sure some people can't or don't want to deal with the wondering of "is my house ok?", especially if it might be days before they can let people back in. You then have the people that think it will never be as bad as they predict and don't want to be away from home if it isn't going to be that bad. I'm sure evacuating isn't fun. Of course neither is dying. Some people won't evacuate if they can't take their pets to a shelter. They all are fairly selfish reasons that don't make a lot of sense to me, but everyone has their moments where they do things that don't make a whole lot of sense.

I got family in Garfield. They lost power, but nothing too serious. Most of the damage was done more down south

Wayne is doing pretty bad. We always have flooding in the area. However, Living on a hill has its perks, and this is one of them. No problems for me at all. No Damage, power all day.

If someone is from a landlocked state, I could see them not knowing better.

Or even if someone is from a coastal state like Jersey but lives inland I could see it.

But if you LIVE on a barrier island, I'd think you'd kind of get the concept that the "land" you live on is not really land at all, but a non-permanent, shifting, thin pile of sand. Completely blows my mind.

Thanks for the update and yeah I'm not worried about flooding besides my basement but I'm in Franklin Lakes so I'm more concerned about trees falling on to my house.

We lost power for about an hour, and just got it back. I really wasn't expecting it back for days, and now I can't sleep. Figures.

Constant surges, but nothing for even longer than 5 seconds.

Also the lights in the sky from the transformers, basically made it nearly day-time in my area.
