I'm sitting on the floor in the middle of the Rockaway mall charging my phone and knitting. The sight is surreal here.

How I didn't lose power with all that wind going all tazmanian-devil where I lived is a mystery wrapped inside a mystery.

Though when I took a walk around my neighborhood at noon today, I saw in some areas :

- A tree toppled over onto a street blocking both ways.

- A Telephone Pole/Street Lamp(I think) looking like the leaning tower of pisa, hanging over the road(which was closed off 'cause of this)

- Another tree toppled onto a home(not much damage fortunately. The house is made of bricks)

- Electrical wires/Power lines either lying on the sidewalk(which I avoided) and/or hanging loosely from a Telephone Pole.

- Yet another tree toppled onto a car, thoroughly smashing it. I certainly don't envy the owner's chances with explaining this to his insurance company.

I also heard that Route 17 North and Southbound had issues involving a wall near a river that was smashed through and as a result a good portion of it had 5 feet of water all over the place.

All in all, Sandy was a real b*tch, wasn't she?
I've seen some downed trees and my friends car got hit by a tree. Route 17 was dead today also. Ghost town.

Area around me in Brooklyn seems to be okay for the most part though a lot of people without power. Areas like Breezy Point, The Rockaways, Sheepshead Bay, and Brighton Beach on the other hand got leveled.

My fathers apartment is on the first floor in Hoboken and thankfully it didn't get flooded but Hoboken sounds like it's part of the Hudson River based on what he told me and pictures I've seen.

Spent the last 10 hours with a chainsaw removing trees. Every time I lose faith in humanity I see things that strengthen my believe that man is inherently good. Don't listen to the pessimist of society. Don't listen to those who offer nothing but criticism while sitting on the sidelines. Your fellow man is good at his core and given the opportunity he will show it unabashedly.

Hey Manilla have you been by Cliffside Park? That's where I'm from, and my friends who live there still got out for a few days. I know LBI is pretty bad. Holy **** is the pier in Seaside really gone? I hope everyone is staying safe, and thoughts are with you all.

Still no power, I stole Wi-Fi when we went to visit my grandmother in rehab. Those are the pictures I took so far.

There were jetty stones in the middle of ocean ave. Madness.

I am exhausted. Spent all night fighting the water at my uncle's house trying to save his finished basement. It felt like titanic, we were pulling sand bags around, and slowed the water so there were ten inches in the basement . Then the wall broke and filled the whole place with three feet of water.

Water was pouring through the windows it was up to our chests, and we were wading through debris. It was surprisingly warm, but we were soaked to the bone from being in the water for so long. When we were finally defeated, we poured a beer from the floating kegerator and kissed his basement goodbye. Then I went outside to take some pictures. It was a horrible night last night.

The generator powering the pumps we were using to try to save the basement was in a wheelbarrow. The water got too high and flipped it over and it was submerged in salt water for hours . This morning, we went back and got it running again after taking apart the carburetor.. took a few hours . Then we brought it to my brother's house to pump out his basement. Did that for awhile then walked around town taking pictures. Went to rehab to see my grandma and saw a family friend whose daughter lives on ocean ave in a house we knew was destroyed. She hadn't heard from her, so when we got back home, we grabbed flashlights and a knife and went over to rescue her . We tried calling her and no answer, but we finally got a call back from her daughter saying she was ok and staying 2 doors down. I've been running on adrenaline all day for the past two days, and now the aches are setting in. Time for bed.

so how many of you guys got affected when the US weather service decided that is was in fact a Hurricane when it hit land and in fact was not a class one listed storm. This took all insurance to the act of god clause and as I posted elsewhere, my home insurance deductible would have gone from 2500 TO 25000. My buddy who works for Lloyds of London did a jig when he saw what the US service did. He said it saved his company at least 1billion pounds as Lloyds holds a lot of insurance in the Manhattan area

Safe and sound in Brooklyn, no damage, not much peril. Lost internet/cable for a while.

My old neighborhood in Brick is completely gone, basically.

njdevsfn95 is safe, talked to him earlier. I dunno if he responded yet.

My mom's cellphone is going straight to voicemail and I'm getting worried.

I decided to volunteer with NYC Service to help clean up.
"There will be various ways to volunteer to help in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy - Want to Volunteer? Please email nycservice@cityhall.nyc.gov with your name, email address and borough. There will be ways to volunteer today and over the next week as opportunities arise.

New York City needs your BLANK!"
https://www.facebook.com/nycservice/...51064667821618

Best of luck all. Hope you've all weathered it well enough.

Also working for a college who won't have power for the next 3 or 4 days means whole week off of work. Silver lining.
