I don't know if their ironic, but is baseball you'll see guys 'traded for themselves"
I remember the one year the Bluejays traded John MacDonald to the Tigers for Future Considerations, and those futures ended up being MacDonald going back.

I remember that. I laughed when I heard the condition.
Aliu was lent to Calgary's farm team but then later Calgary traded for him when Aliu was already playing for them. So Calgary traded away a guy to get who they already had.

That's a pretty big stretch to call ironic, even with the loose definition of ironic being used. Aliu was only eligible to play for the Jets in the NHL up until the trade, the Flames liked what they saw enough to trade Negrin and Aliu ended up playing some games for the Flames.
The fact the Flames were willing to give him a chance with their AHL affiliate while the Jets weren't made the trade highly likely, not ironic.
For me an ironic trade is when the leafs traded Larry Murphy to Detroit for nothing. Leafs fans were glad to rid of the guy because there were convinced his career was over and he was washed up. Red Wing fans think other wise
When the Jets traded Kris Draper to the wings for ONE BUCK(not sure if it was US or Canadian) the feeling was at the time Draper was career ahlers and the jets needed room to develop players that believed would turn into players (this was also during the Mike Smith the future is russia era) and that players like Draper were going the way of the do do bird
Not a trade, but its too funny and fitting not to post. Ottawa drafted Mathieu Chouinard in the first round in '98 but were unable to come to agreement on a contract enabling him to re-enter the draft only to be picked by the sens again in 2000. Ultimate troll job b
Wings make everyone mad when they draft Joe Murphy over hometown Kid Jimmy Carson.
Carson turns into a crazy goal scorer. Murphy was a bust.
Detroit trades Murphy and Graves and Klima for Carson and whoever.... Carson's career immediately goes in the toilet while Murphy wins the Cup, turns into a solid two-way guy and Graves becomes a big time goal scorer
Chelios to Detroit for Anders Eriksson and two 1st rounders
This.
Also, the saga of Stephane Beauregard. Beauregard was traded by Winnipeg to Buffalo for Ruuttu. He was then flipped to Chicago for Dominik Hasek. Then Chicago and Winnipeg made the same deal, trading Ruutu and Beauregard again. Twice for each other in under two months. Beauregard ultimately ended up getting traded AGAIN to Philadelphia, spent a year there as backup, and was traded BACK to Winnipeg.
Between June 1992 and June 1993, he started and ended with the Jets, was involved in four trades done by the Jets and five total, and played only for Philadelphia.
1st time out of Anaheim the 2nd time back into Anaheim then again being traded to the team GMed by the same GM that originally dealt him weird loop he took

Are either of those REALLY ironic? seem like soft examples.
