I guess I shouldn't be surprised that they'll milk that cash cow into the ground.

New Star Wars Movies Will Hit Every Summer Beginning in 2015
New trilogy will alternate with standalone films.
You can milk anything with nipples. Why couldn't they just make the continuation of the original series and then just release the 'spinoffs' afterwards? It's like the winter classic situation. Just too much exposure, it will kill the appeal.

With the prequels, you could still just think of Star Wars as the original three movies. But with this... nonsense... you kill any hope of that.

If you want to use the original characters, recast them. But better yet, go play in the Old Republic period. Or some far future. Whatever. Then you can get all the commercial appeal of Star Wars without ruining the legacy of the original trilogy.

Why would they ruin it though? There's not evena trailer out yet, so how can you be so harsh on them?

It could be great, it could be bad. We can only wait and see right now.

As for what those standalone films will be -- among the rumored projects have been a Yoda flick, young Han Solo adventures, and my favorite, a Seven Samurai-type Jedi film -- we still don't know. But, of course, more on this when we have it…
That's an intriguing idea. I'd be interested in seeing that, as long it pays respect to Seven Samurai (like The Magnificent Seven), is directed in at least a semi-artistic manner and isn't just a rip-off of the idea.

I can see a peace-loving planet being threatened by "intergalactic scum" and the forces of good having their hands full with bigger threats, so one sympathetic (probably young) jedi travels the sector, looking in seedy and remote locations for jedis to join him. Of course, these jedis would be some combination of outcast, retired, over-the-hill, cynical, poor mannered and mangy and would not have used the Force or a lightsabre for anything noble or important in decades. They'd be "jedis" in name, but you'd never feel that even seven of them would be up to the task. It'd be a refreshing reversal of the quality>quantity jedi trademark. We're used to seeing just one or two all-powerful jedi turning the tide of battle, so it'd be different to see a whole bunch of low-quality jedi trying to do the same. Of course, by the end of the film, they would all have re-found much of their lost skills and purpose and re-dedicated themselves to the jedi principles. I could see it working.

Seven Samurai remakes, re-imaginings and homages are cliched and hackneyed.

I'm not even a Star Wars fan (I actually cannot sit through an entire Star Wars movie in one sitting) but is Disney really a company you need to worry about "butchering" a franchise like Star Wars? If anyone can do right in sticking close to the source material and keeping something true to it's essence, I think it's them. Hell, they've shut down almost anything non-new movie related to ensure that the stories they are going to tell all build upon each other and tell a universally strong tale, or so it seems.

I see. If you have a better idea for a plot, feel free to share it so that we can judge it for you.

There's nothing wrong with re-using a fantastic plot formula every now and then in a fresh way. We've been doing it with stories for as long as we've been speaking. When it comes to movies, it's better than trying to be "original" (which often means borrowing disparate plot elements from multiple movies, as opposed to just one) and failing horribly. Today's big-scale movies tend to suffer from poor coherency, structure and/or character development. Their writers could learn something from classic stories like Seven Samurai, which have all three. We've seen the plot before, but you'd barely recognize it in a Star Wars setting (and the vast majority of filmgoers wouldn't recognize it at all, because they've never seen Seven Samurai). There'll be four or five other Star Wars films that are likely to be incoherent and frantic because Disney wants to pack in the most special effects and weird creatures. It'd be nice to have just one where the story is the priority.

That seemed pretty cool. Boba Fett crawling out of the pit would be a rad beginning, haha. But then he got into the Avengers crap and I didn't care anymore.

Interesting. He might be a pretty decent Jacen Solo if they decide to put him in the new films.

I think it's going to be an original story. I thought they said they weren't using anything from the books.

As long as they don't have a Sith Lord as the main villain, then I'm good
