I have tickets to Anthony Bourdain tomorrow night and have absolutely no idea what to expect out of him. I've seen his show and I can relate to it...traveling the world, drinking etc in various places from dives to 5 star; but I honestly have no idea what he's going to do for a performance. One of the girls I've started associating with wanted to go so I picked up tickets for her and her partner-in-crime, since I can't take the chance of being unbalanced with only one lady.

Yeah that's strange, it's just gonna be stand-up I assume?

Not sure how well that's gonna go.

Bourdain's an interesting story, though, I would love to hear him talk.

Don't mean to cross into the "No Politics" territory but I thought this was really interesting, and may have gotten lost last night.

Puerto Rico voted 60/40 in favor of statehood for the first time ever.

Any thoughts on this?

I'm happy to report that a 51 star flag would look impressively symmetrical.

So I went on facebook yestarday, and amusingly enough I had nobody *****ing about the results of the elections. The only real political thing I got was from george takei being happy about the lesbian senator.....I actually had more posts of people *****ing about people *****ing about politics. Made me laugh....

...aaaaand I showed up

To my credit, I had one of those weird nights of sleep where I woke up not feeling even remotely groggy or tired and even trying to sleep in a little bit didn't feel comfortable.

I had that running internally at my last job, along with "Poor company policies don't constitute an emergency on my part." It's a good thing my boss was a super nice guy and very laid back, otherwise no one would have worked there.

In some areas the company operated at 50% of the necessary staff due to the workload.

When the workload increased by 20% in volume, with the most complex orders growing 50%, the company saw fit to increase staff by 9%.

There was absolutely no standardization of documents. You could have the same form looking 10 different ways depending on who produced it.

I think I calculated the average experience at my position, a highly technical one, to be 3 years.

The only good part was that I was terrifically good at working within the various broken systems, and I knew I had great job security because they couldn't afford to fire anyone. Ended up being promoted to a senior level position within 9 months. Still, not worth it, and glad I was forced to quit and move. Miss the people though.

Working for a cheap company really sucks.

Main module in one of our core switches started flaking out this morning. The specific error isn't well documented, but I have a rough idea of what the problem is. Unfortunately, since our owner doesn't want to pay for a support contract on THE TWO MOST IMPORTANT PIECES OF EQUIPMENT IN THE NETWORK, I'm in limbo on actually fixing the problem.

Drives me nuts when places cheap out on things like this. Makes my job 1000x times harder. I should be able to call Cisco and get an answer on the problem within a couple hours tops. Instead I might have to cancel my Allegheny trip this weekend to site her and babysit this.

Tell them it can't be repaired and replacing it is the only option. Problem solved.

That's where its's going, but that opens up another can of worms since sourcing old parts isn't a cakewalk. ( Cisco hasn't sold this module since 2007, and it's on their 'We won't support it even if you pay us' list. )

Sweet, I love unsupported hardware. Time to fire up Google and start looking at random computer shops.

Hey, how's the GF situation? Is she getting surgery? I hope her mind isn't so cloudy and confused about her health.

LOL. Thankfully the resale market for used Cisco equipment is fairly robust, but I still had to chase a couple places to get what I needed.

It's still inherently frustrating to have to bandaid old hardware like this. Just one more thing...

She decided she really doesn't want the surgery. I can't say I entirely blame her since her doctors didn't paint a very pretty picture for her if she had it since her vitals are low. She decided to go an herbal route to see if it would help at all instead of doing the surgery. She's been doing that for a few days now without any significant improvement. The lady doing the herbal treatment said she should expect to see some improvement by Saturday with it being completely healed by next Wednesday. If she's still having problems, surgery is pretty much her only option then.

I have my doubts about the whole herbal thing, but I'm pretty much just letting her go with it since she really wanted to try it. Obviously her doctors didn't care too much about that decision either, but it is what it is. Either it works or it doesn't, and if it doesn't then she's back to having the surgery anyway.

Ugh, for the last couple days at work I've become like a human magnet. So charged with static electricity that my clothes are practically glued to me, such an uncomfortable sensation.

Not even sure what could be causing it, I'm wearing the same sets of clothes I have been driving the same car the same way to the same place and sitting at the same desk. Now I'm just randomly all static.
