However if the lockout were to end before or during the tournament nuge would likely join the oilers leaving team canada scrambling. Ideally the lockout ends right after the tournament ends so we see a solid team canada hopefully win gold and then a shortened nhl season
Now that i think about it i don't think teams would pull their players mid tournament, would they ?

Um I don't think Edmonton is going to leave their number one centre to be playing with little kids in Russia when every game matters even more in a shortened season for playoff implications, the second the deal is made he will be on the next flight home. That's a guarantee.

I wonder if they'll consider RNH for the captaincy.

Without a doubt, the players there will be looking up to him due to his prestige as a player plus he has the bonus of prior experience with team Canada from various U-18 tournaments as well the full WHCs last year. He's been the either captain or assistant captain for many teams throughout his career as well so he wouldn't be unfamiliar with the role.

He may not be the most vocal guy but he's a very intense and competitive player who would lead the team by example. Obviously I'm a bit biased here but I think he'd be a great choice.

I think the NHL lockout will end next week. I know some people are pessimistic, but this is kinda gonna be Team Canada's (bad) luck.

I hope you are wrong, but I think you may be right. I hope Fehr manages to *** off the owners for another few weeks anyway.

I dont agree. If they are releasing him to play in the tourney then they are doing just that. And he should be there for the duration of the tournament. No matter what.

And I really dont think there is going to be an end to the lockout anytime soon anyway. There may be some last ditch effort to get a season in around the beginning of January, but most likely the season is toast.

Assuming a deal is reached during the WJC, there is ZERO doubt in my mind that Ryan Nugent-Hopkins will be playing in the season-opener for the Oilers. If teams are hesitant to release players for the Olympics when it minimally affects the NHL, there's no way they would let him play in a junior championship when he could be playing on the big club.

If we're lucky, the team might let him finish the WJC and miss some of training camp - at least, unlike some of our players, he'll be in game shape.

I agree they won't want him to miss actual games, but is that really likely to happen?

From what I have heard, Hockey Canada has negotiated with the club and RNH, that once we are beyond a certain date, RNH is committed to the WJHC for the duration no matter what happens with the NHL lockout. The only question is, what the drop dead date is....

I am pretty sure there is no way Edmonton pulls him out of this huge tournament. It wouldn't look good at all IMO. Just let him finish it.

When was the last time a player was pulled off Team Canada's WJC roster to come back to their team prematurely?

Im thinking never.

Yeah. If RNH is with the team once they have left for Europe he will stay there. I imagine the Oilers will pull him out if a lockout ended prior to that date.

Source?

I haven't seen anything from anyone to indicate any such back room deal.

The most official and (IMO) most likely scenario is that within the first part of next week the NHL schedule is cancelled through til' some point after Jan. 1rst.

Other than that...Hockey Canada will have to roll the dice and hope for the best as far as RNH is concerned.

I heard it myself, it was either Bobby Mac on TSN said it, or it was on air radio interview with Eric Francis... but can't really remember who said it specifically, all these interviews mesh into one after a while...
And it's not really a back room deal... HC has to spell out, hey if it goes beyond a certain date, you get to a point, a date where he's 100% committed until January 4th (Medal Games) I don't know what the drop dead date is, but I'm assuming once Rosters are set with the IIHF on the 25th, then there's no turning back.

If the lockout ends before the WJC which i think is a distinct possibility despite what transpired last week, RNH will be on a one way ticket to Edmonton instantly, no chance that he continues on to play in the WJC.

Edit: I guess you were talking about pulling him out during the tournament. Yeah, i don't see that happening.

Leaving Canada's world junior team mid-tournament should be considered treason.

Say that again if we miss the playoffs by a couple points as a result.

Won't happen, but really. There is essentially 0.000001% the season starts before Jan 4th.

Definitely would be Hockey Canada career suicide for him. Good luck ever being considered for an Olympic team.

Getting super pumped to Watch this tournament, the only down side is no Klefbom. Canada is going to have a stacked team. Just going to be a blast to watch.
