I personally think it is a Jay-Bo trade too. As mentioned above, Stauffer loves him and mentioned the Oilers should have tried to acquire him back at the draft.
He said that players like hall, yak, ebs, RNH, Shultz and even went to as far as guys like Marcinin would not be available. So It wouldn't be a package of great significance going back to the flames for taking 1.5 years of Jay-Bo's cap off their hands.
I am thinking the Flames are going to finally realize that they should rebuild and start trying to acquire assets for the players that are aging...

The Flames went out this offeseason and spent. Nothing in the last 2 months has changed to make them realize they need to sell off JBo for nothing, especially to a division rival.
As far as youth, the Flames are doing just fine. The Flames have many prospects absolutely tearing it up right now in the AHL and Europe. Baertchi, Backlund, Gadreau, Cervenka, etc... with these prospects all exceeding their expectations, why are the Flames choosing this point to rebuild? And not just rebuild, jetison their players for nothing to division rivals?
Really hope its Luongo for Hemsky. Ales gets so much hate because he's had a rash of injuries but he is EXACTLY what our team needs - someone in that second line who can make a ****ing pass. And he's absolutely elite at playmaking and should have no trouble keeping up with the speed.

The truth is the "big 4" are at least 3 years from the beginning of their prime, which would have Luongo at 36, by the time the window is opening.
If the Oilers are looking for a goalie to ride along for the dynasty, they'd be much better off going for another younger goalie to play with Dubnyuk. Bring in a guy like Greiss. Have him play as a tandem/compete for #1 job with Dubnyuk.
Do you even watch the Canucks and Oilers. The thought of the Sedins and Hemsky endlessly skating around in the offensive zone passing the puck back and forth with no one shooting is enough to make my head spin. Anson Carter and Burrows work on that line. Hemsky would be a disaster.

Hemsky is far from what the Canucks need. The chances of him being healthy through a full season and long playoff run are slim to none.
The Canucks need big strong wingers that can stay healthy and produce offense. Also a 3rd line center.

I don't hate the Oilers at all, just don't think Phoenix would trade Keith Yandle for a bunch of mediocre players. Nevermind that they'd have to pay all of them.

Totally agree with you, I had the same comment regarding any possible trades with the Sens involving Lu. The timing is off.

Well, as previous history has indicated the Oilers organizations "WOW" factor definition and the rest of the worlds "WOW" factor definition are QUITE different.
Nonetheless, I can unfortunately see the Oilers moving PRV ++ for someone of Luongo's status. Anything less than a headline player will be a disappointment.

Luongo probably has 3-4 years left and I'd say that's conservative. The Oilers don't expect their big 4 to be good in the next 3-4 years?
Not to mention Dubnyk does not have the ability to be a high-end starter. Gives the Oilers 3-4 years to develop their guy as well. Luongo was a tremendous mentor for Schneider, and would be in the twilight of his career for the next kid. In the mean time the Oilers get legitimate goaltending.
Believe me, only the fans are short-sighted enough to beleive that Luongo in Edmonton would be a bad idea. He's pretty much exactly what that team needs. If Oiler fans can look past the Canuck-stains on him, they'd see the benefits as well.

Exactly. If the Oilers aren't competitive next year, then something has gone horribly wrong with the rebuild IMO. You look at the teams that successfully rebuilt from the ground up, and they very quickly went from terrible to contenders...

The Hawks had Sharp, Hossa and talent at every position (evidenced by the large offload of those players because they couldnt remain under the cap) Pens won with Crosby and Malkin.
Noone is expecting the Oilers to win next year, but its called progression and development. Lu is trending down while the Oiler forwards are trending up

With all due respect to Luongo, his contract length is ugly and not something that we should be looking to acquire. Would he be an upgrade to our team? Sure, Dubnyk has not proven himself to be better than Luongo yet and probably never will, but you don't just say "hey so and so will improve my club so who gives a damn about cap implications, let's get him!". Now if there is some sort of clause in the new CBA that saddles the team that signed the player to said deal when he retires/is sent to the minors regardless of what team he ends up retiring/being sent to the AHL from then I consider this very closely and make a play for Roberto. Something that hasn't been mentioned is that if there is an amnesty buyout and the Canucks do that with him, perhaps he wouldn't mind playing for the Oilers and will sign with us as a FA? But with his current contract and players in the minors counting against the cap in the next CBA, I'd have no reason to add Luongo.

Lu being horrible in a few years seems to be the consensus around here. How many elite goalies fall off the face of the earth in their mid 30's though. I was always under the impression that 30's were prime years for goalie. It's not the same as skaters people!
