Backlund to Detroit?

Babcock mentioned that he was a big fan of Backlund.

Im not into giving him up for nothing, or even an older player. But just curious what Detroit fans would be willing to give for him?

I think he would definitely be available, but he will not be let go for peanuts as he still has good upside. Perhaps a "good" RW or defensive prospect.

I don't think there will be any offers that I'd personally find fair since this would basically be selling low, but it'll be interesting to see what people put out there.

Yeah, we have basically 16 forwards already.

Flip-Dats-Nyquist
Franzen-Z-Brunner
Cleary-Helm-Sammy
Miller-Abby-Bert
Mursak-Tatar-Emmerton
Eaves

And that's not counting that some kid would break out on roster (little unlikely, though).

I think Bäcklund still has some hidden potential but right now the last thing Red Wings need is another bottom 6er.

Yeah, it would have to come in a series of moves or as part of the JayBo move... Yeah I know where this heads and will avoid even starting offers in that direction, but that is the only way I see it.

Even forgot to put Tootoo in the list of forwards above. They are jammed full of forwards. Would require a lot of other moves.

Yeah forgot all about him, lol. That makes it basically 17. Emmerton could be waived or whatever, Eaves on IR, Tatar in minors but still at 14.

And the management seems to go on with Helm as third line C. And we have TON of guys that could play wings on third line. Sammy, Tatar, Nyquist, Brunner, Cleary, Miller, Bert..

The current situation for the Wings is 14 forwards on one-way deals, with Eaves and Emmerton likely going to IR. Nyquist, Brunner, and Tatar are all likely to be considered for/make the final roster. So Calgary would have to take at least one forward back.

Realistically, Detroit is looking to get rid of forwards, not add them; the Wings have ten forwards signed to one-way deals through at least 2013-14, plus Nyquist, Tatar, Jurco, Sheahan, Jarnkrok, Pulkinnen, Andersson. Brunner is on a one-year, two-way deal but may come back.

I'm more concerned with keeping Filppula than trading for Backlund.

I would want filpulla coming back in a deal for J-Bo.

His value isn't super high so we're better off keeping him. He's tearing it up in Allsvensken right. Not that second tier Swedish league play is indicative of NHL talent but he's ahead of some pretty notable players there.

We probably couldn't get much more than a second/equivalent prospect, and if that's what we're getting it's not really worth it.

Most Wings fans would probably do that considering Filppula is a UFA after the season. Problem is I suspect that very reason he'll be valued as more a throw-in type guy to Flames fans rather than a centerpiece of a deal which makes any consensus on a Filppula-Bouwmeester centered deal fairly unlikely. Wings fans value them as basically even I'd say, Flames will want a + or even ++ for that.

Backlund wouldn't be an improvement on anything we have and we already have too many forwards. Adding him for nothing would hurt us by taking away ice time from our young guys. At this point I wouldn't give up anything we have for him.
