Rangers fan here saying, if JT didn't want to be in LI, he would not have signed the deal he's currently getting. He could've gotten 7+ easily on the open market.
I think it DOES set an artificial limit on what the Isles will spend on UFA's, but it's not because Tavares will throw a hissy fit if he's not the highest paid player on the Isles. He's not the type to do that. But because the Isles deem him their star, they won't be willing to shell out more than he already makes to bring someone in off the free market to help out him out. Because, well, Wang is cheap (sorry).
I don't see it as a big issue if its for a player like Perry that could take the Islanders one step closer to being a truly better team. Like TriCycleDriveby stated, he just wants to win. He wants help. He can't carry this team by himself, and he knows that. He also knows his next contract will/should be a lot more lucrative then the one he is under now.
He's not even the highest player right now, Visnovsky is at 5.6 mill.
JT knows he's worth more and if his goal was to be the highest player on the team he would have set the bar higher in negotiations, he will get his 7-9 mill a year contract next time around, for now he's saving the team some coin and hoping the others do get signed with the extra cash.

Pretty much this. I HIGHLY doubt it will matter much to Tavares, it's obvious to me that he cares about winning more than anything and he is probably more than satisfied with how much money he is making at his age. But, unfortunately for us fans, the organization will probably use this as yet another excuse to not spend money. I, too, think we should throw the bank at Perry. We have the room and we desperately need that elite winger for Tavares, and you can't get much better than Perry.
A player like Perry, with 8 years NHL experience (double that of Tavares) and all-star production, has earned the right to be paid more than Tavares. Wait til you see what Tavares' next contract looks like.

Just hope we are the ones signing him to his next deal which will pay him among the games elite.
Like anything, it depends on who, when and how much.
There's probably 1-2 dozen players in the NHL worth more than JT gets.. and another dozen or two that are close.. if we get one of those players, I don't think JT will care about their contract if it'll help us win..
But that's now.. In 4 years we could very well see several less-than-JT-type Islanders making JT-type money, because that's what the market will be..
The getzlaf deal was astonishing for me because it didnt reflect the reduced cap hit due to the new cba. Do the first liners/pairings of the nhl really expect to get the same money as before? If the isles ever had a chance to sign fa's then they gotta do so in this market. Meet superstars offers and you will make deals. Im just thinking of how much a guy like vanek would love to play with a capable center and a team that is stacked in talent. Find your selling points and use them.
