Teemu Pulkkinen is the definition of a boom-or-bust prospect.

I expect him to bust.

This. Marek Tvrdon really also is getting this feel. He isn't real strong in his own end, so unless his game grows a lot in other zones he is going to have to be an offensive stud.

I would say Detroit has 2 big candidates for this. Pullkinen and Jurco. Pulks was a later round pick but got big hype, I think hes going to bust.

On the other hand, Jurco slipped a bit and is looking to me like he will be able to play on a scoring line and be a real contributor. The flashes of skill in the AHL are awesome and he has really adjusted well the last few games

Half the guys being listed aren't even "boom or bust" prospects. To me this means they either make the NHL as projected or they don't make it at all. A guy like Huberdeau has a pretty good chance at an NHL future regardless of whether or not he reaches his potential

why do you think Grigorenko will bust? because he doesnt throw his body at opponents?

He was a #12 pick in a weak draft so even if he became a 45 point #2 center he wouldnt be considered a bust, heck there is a better chance he lives up to his draft position than Galchenyuk who was a top 3 pick.

He could likely play this season based on skill and vision alone

Ryan Murphy - Size and defense.
Mark Jankowski - Early to say, but he was a bit of a reach.
Jack Campbell - Stats aren't everything, but kinda struggled in the OHL and this past WJC.
Tomas Jurco - Tons of skills, but will they translate to the NHL?
Teemu Pulkkinen - Dominated at WJC's, but hasn't exactly done the same in the FEL and future NHL success doesn't look too good.
Rocco Grimaldi -Size.
Tyler Toffoli - Dominated the OHL, but can he translate it to the NHL?
Zack Phillips - Skating is somewhat of an issue, but not a huge deal.
Kirill Kabanov - Highly regarded a few years ago, but not too much anymore.
Nino Niederreiter - Struggled big time in his first NHL season.
Christian Thomas - Size and ability to translate OHL success to NHL success.
Matt Puempel - Has really just regressed every year since his dominant rookie season in the OHL.
Nikita Kucherov - Size and Russian factor.
Nikita Gusev - Size and Russian factor.
Jordan Schroeder - Size and hasn't looked like the same dominant player from a few years ago.
Evgeny Kuznetsov - Russian factor.

Zack Kassian could end up being a solid fourth-line grinder/enforcer or the best powerforward in the game. His skillet would probably prevent him from being a total bust, though.

what is the definition of bust? because for me to bust means your are not a regular NHL player. If Kassian became a 30 point 3rd liner who plays physical I wouldnt consider than a bust. Is he a boom if he puts up 55 points?

I don't think there really is a true definition of the term, as far as hockey goes. IMO, a bust player is someone who doesn't live up anywhere close to their initial press and early billing. For instance, I think Gilbert Brule would qualify as a bust, even though he's still been around the league and played quite a few seasons.

If Kassian was a 30 point third-liner, I wouldn't consider him a bust or a boom; a player who never lived up to his potential but still carved out a decent NHL career.

3 letters: 'K', 'H', and 'L'.

I don't see him doing that. But I would define bolting to the KHL as a bust.

Is Sam Gagner a bust to this point, for example? Brian Little? Because to me that is what I expect a player like Strome to become even if he doesn't develop into a high-end player. Not absolute worst case scenario, but I don't think it is likely at all that he ends up worse than those two. And I absolutely do not consider that to be a bust.
