Because the Leafs are currently one of softest team in the league ?
The forward corps is so cluttered though - especially the bottom 6.
We have gritty defensive forwards in Steckel, McClement, Brown and Komarov, and we just let Rosehill walk (which was stupid imo - especially watching Boston and Montreal bulk up this offseason).
They may not have the most offensive games to compliment their grit, but they will already be sharing icetime with Connolly, Kadri, Ashton, Colborne, Lombardi, Frattin and MacArthur...
I would love having a guy like Clutterbuck or some one, but it doesn't make a whole lot of sense right now. Not unless we clear out some forwards in return. Adding a new guy in really would complicate things.
We don't need a gritty 3rd liner or a bottom 6 player for the matter. Frattin and McClement will be able to fulfill that role as soon as the season starts. Maybe add Kadri into the mix as well and you have got one helluva 3rd line.
But for it to happen, the Leafs would need to ship out a few of the 2nd/3rd line tweeners they already have on the roster (Connolly, Lombardi, MacArthur, Bozak, etc.) either in this deal, in a separate deal for picks/prospects, or as part of a package to fill another need (#1C, #1G, top 4 Defensive Dman)

Not to mention you guys claim to be in the middle of a big rebuild, and not concerned with finishing high in the standings, so it really doesn't make sense to get a piece like Clutterbuck - who would be the final touch to a contending team, looking to get deep in the playoffs. For a rebuilding team, he would only slow down the rebuild - similar to the Kessel trade. That's how I see it anyway.
