LW Michael Raffl (2007 undrafted, Philadelphia UFA signing)

With reports coming out that Philly/Nashville are looking to sign the 24 year old Austrian winger, I was wondering if anyone can comment on him. Played last year in Sweden's 2nd league, putting up 46 points in 49 games. Anyone seen him play?

Michael stems from the same breed as Calder finalist Michael Grabner. They actually are almost the same age (Raffl is 2 years younger than Grabs) and played for the same team. After leaving NHL style Austrian hockey for Sweden it took Michael 1 year to adapt. In his second year he absolutely rocked the league.

Raffl is a solid scoring forward with no spectacular upsides and downsides. He doesn't back off in tough situations, the team always can rely on his abilities. At the age of 21/22 he was the leader of his team in the Austrian league and now took over a similar role in Sweden.

I'm confident that after 1 year of adaption to NHL hockey he will be a reliable role player with scoring contributions. Considering cap reduction teams are looking for inexpensive role players. Raffl fits that descritpion.

Don't know legit this is, but German article reporting Flyers have signed him.

EDIT: Source is legit. Bill Meltzer confirms, he has signed with the Flyers.

Let's see if any other teams enter the Raffl raffle.

Yeah, I'll leave now.

So for those of you that have seen Raffl play, what's his potential?

I still don't think his potential is all that high, but he has been playing great hockey lately ever since he got bumped up to Giroux's line.

A good all around player. Has played on the PK, isn't afraid to go to the dirty areas, and has good speed to boot.

Looks like the Flyers found another great find (like Matt Read).

Yeah, I agree his upside seems a bit limited, but he can be the defensive conscience/3rd piece of a scoring line as he has decent offensive chops. Long-term, I'd say he looks like a 2-way, ~40-point winger.

Could be another Ville Leino. Could be another Matt Read. Too soon to tell

I don't think his downside would be Leino

Saw him play in Nashville a couple weeks ago, really liked his play! For some reason his contract is for 12 or 13 years in NHL 14 though...
