Helmets and Gloves in SO

After seeing the thread of the SO goal it got me thinking why players wear helmets? They just get in the way same thing with gloves it would be so much easier to daggle during SO it would create some interesting goals. You canít move your wrist much while wearing gloves.

Helmet is whatever. But the gloves are most definitely needed. These guys dont train without gloves. It just doesnt feel right. Gloves are more then flexible in all the right areas.

it would be way harder to stickhandle without gloves, especially after playing a game, the stick would slip on wet hands.

Some of them go in pretty hard to the net, if they trip (which we've seen many times) and hit their head on the goal post at full speed, it could be very dangerous... and embarrassing.

It wouldn't be easier for me without gloves. I've gotten so used to them that not having them really ****s me up.

Surely I'm not alone on that.

Why bother with the cumbersome shoulder pads, hockey pants, shin pads, elbow pads and cans either? Get rid of all that extra weight. The SO is just a gimmick anyway so why bother with any that crap that just weighs a player down.

With all we know now about concussions, there is no way the NHL would be cool with no helmets in a SO. Not wearing one in warm ups is really dumb. Pucks are flying all OVR the place, I would definitely wear one (I've been hit in the head multiple times in warm ups and always duck behind the net when I'm passing by).

What if the goalie tries a poke-check and trips the player, and he falls on his head?

I don't like the feeling of the stick without gloves. Even with roller I either use a different stick or will wear gloves.

Safety reasons aside, I can't imagine any reason a player would ever want to take a shootout without gloves, it completely changes the feel of the puck. To this day I even need my gloves to stickhandle on the extremely rare instance I play street hockey with the neighborhood kids.

If your gloves are restricting your range of motion, even the slightest bit, you need to find a pair that fits better.

Uh, they play almost every single second of hockey in helmets and gloves, why would they change?

And have you ever played with hockey gloves? Once you play with hockey gloves for a while, it feels incredibly strange to go gloveless.....

If it offered a benefit, they would do it.

When I first bought my gloves it was a b**** to stick handle. Now after multiple games and skates with me wearing them, they are so flexible and broken in that I prefer them on over not wearing them when stickhandling. I agree with your post, without them I think I screw up more.

After Martin St.Louis' naked shoot out video he gave an interview and said giving up his gloves was the worst mistake he made.

I don't mean to sound rude but have you ever played hockey before? There is no potential benefit to playing with no gloves. The top one creates extra grip, the second creates more power. Anyone who's ever played and lost a glove would know.

Helmet, maybe not necessary but I can see why it is mandatory.

Gloves, my personal opinion is that even if the option to wear them was there, I wouldn't take them off. I feel way more comfortable with them on and they aren't an obstruction what so ever.

Is there a rule that states that gloves must be worn in the shootout? I bet if a player actually wanted to they could throw them off and do it without them?
